According to the NYPD, there were 133 incidents of anti-Asian violence in 2021, a 343% increase over the year before. While there have been fewer incidents this year, the violence continues to take a toll on New Yorkers of Asian descent.
"News All Day" was joined Monday by Dr. Evelyn Kuang and May Tan from the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center, a non-profit that provides health care with a focus on Asians in New York City.
Kuang and Tan say signs that Asian youth may be struggling with their mental health include sleep difficulties, loss of interest in activities and friends, anger, panic attacks, hypervigilance, and an increase in substance abuse.
To support anyone who is suffering from anti-Asian abuse and struggling with their mental health, Kuang and Tan suggest actively listening, encouraging them to report abuse and to seek mental health care, and sharing your own story or experience with racial trauma with the person in need.
