Umbrella Arts Festival celebrates Asian, South Asian, Pacific Islander culture and a return to community gatherings in Fountain Square - Evanston RoundTable

The Umbrella Arts Festival is a celebration of Asian, South Asian, Pacific
Islander (ASPA) culture and art. The event is designed to increase visibility and representation of the ASPA community and to engage the community-at-large in collective experiences that work to dispel harmful myths and narratives about the ASPA community. It provides opportunities to raise awareness, educate and engage people in dialogues that counter the rise in anti-Asian hate and violence that continues throughout the country.

The Umbrella Arts Festival invites people into these experiences and conversations through the arts. The umbrella symbolizes the ASPA diaspora which includes a diversity of ethnicities from over 40 countries around the world, and is inclusive of the many intersections of identities that exist in our communities.

The festival is free and open to all ages!

The Umbrella Arts Festival is one of many activities and events taking place in and around Evanston to celebrate ASPA Heritage Month in May. The newly formed Evanston ASPA group has created a calendar highlighting the many in-person and virtual opportunities to celebrate ASPA Heritage Month in the Greater Chicago Area. Activities – Among the many hands-on activities at the event, Kids Create Change will be hosting rangoli and lantern making for all ages.

Performances – We are extremely excited to announce that performances by Mandala Arts Flying Fairies, Nayon Troupe, and Bollywood Groove will be part of our line-up, followed by a live concert by Funkadesi.

Guest speakers – Speakers include the Mayor of Evanston, Daniel Biss and chair of the Asian American Caucus, Josina Morita.
