The Apple Watch is getting its annual facelift with WatchOS 8 with extra workout modes, more flexible messaging tools and a new portrait watch face. Apple released the public beta of WatchOS 8 Wednesday, which gives us a sneak peek of the operating system that will be released in the fall. While there are no big interface surprises in the new OS, Apple has refined the Watch experience to bring many features in line with the iPhone.

WatchOS 8 will run on all Apple Watches from the Series 3 and later. We don't recommend installing any beta software on your primary device, but if you do want to preview the new features coming to iOS 15 and WatchOS 8, you can find out how to download them here.

Here are the best new Apple Watch features we've found so far.

WatchOS 8 puts portrait photos on your wrist

Using any portrait mode photo taken on the iPhone, you can now add the Portraits watch face to see these images on your wrist. But rather than displaying as a static image, the watch uses segmentation data from the photo to separate the foreground from the background. This means time appears just behind the head of your subject and if you raise your wrist or like to fidget with the Digital Crown, the subject pops in and out, too.

I've found it works best with photos that have a lot of distance between the foreground and background, plus ample headroom above your subject so you can really see the effect. Some complications are also supported so you can put elements like battery level or heart rate on the watch face as well.

The Photos app itself also gets some new tools like surfacing your memories and featured photos, so new content is synced to the Watch daily. Plus you can now share photos straight from the Watch through Messages or through the Mail app.

AssistiveTouch is a mind-blowing accessibility feature

Apple announced AssistiveTouch in May along with a range of accessibility features for the iPhone and iPad.

It lets people who only have the use of one arm control the Apple Watch by detecting movement in the hand and wrist, like pinching or clenching actions. So you don't need to be able to touch the screen to interact with the watch.

Lexy Savvides/CNET

It's difficult to describe how intuitive this feels until you use it. Pinch your thumb and forefinger and the watch will move the focus to navigate through menu options. A double pinch moves back, while a clench is a tap action to select something on the screen. AssistiveTouch is also customizable so you could set a double clench action to answer a call or bring up the action menu.

Better messaging tools

When you go to send a message, you'll now be able to use the scribble tool, emoji selector or the dictation option all from the same screen. Plus, if you go to dictate a message but find it makes an error in the transcription, you'll now be able to select the word and use the Digital Crown to make corrections. It's something I appreciate as my Australian accent often results in some pretty amusing dictation errors.

Just like on the iPhone, you can send a GIF by selecting the image magnifying glass icon and choosing either from the trending list, or searching for one from your wrist.

New apps coming to Watch OS

The Contacts app is finally available on your wrist so you can edit, add, browse and share without pulling out your phone. Apple has also expanded its Find My app into two new apps: Find Items and Find Devices. They do exactly what they say on the tin and you can ping items like the AirTag, or find devices signed in to your Apple ID from the Watch.

WatchOS 8 also works in conjunction with the Focus mode on the iPhone, so you can limit distractions coming through or customize modes so only notifications from certain contacts and apps break through. Once you apply the mode on the iPhone it automatically sets it on the Watch as well. It's also supposed to be smart about Focus suggestions, like prompting you to turn on the mode when you start a workout. I'll need to spend more time with the beta before it can pick up my usage patterns.

Two new workout options -- and Mindfulness

There are two new workout types you can track: Pilates and tai chi. They use customized heart rate and motion algorithms to better determine your effort than if you used to track these workouts using the "Other" option in the workouts app. Apple's Fitness Plus also gets a picture-in-picture mode, plus additional workouts filters.

Apple has also moved the Breathe app into a new Mindfulness app. On top of being able to see animations to help guide your breathing, there's also a Reflect app that gives prompts to help focus your thoughts. I really like the new animations in the Mindfulness app and in the short time I've used them, they do help to focus my attention. The time you spend reflecting appears in the Health app on the iPhone (along with your heart rate) after each session.

Sleep tracking also adds respiration rate to the existing sleep metrics like heart rate and time asleep. You can also view trends over time in the Health app on the iPhone.

We'll update this story as we uncover more of the best features in the WatchOS 8 public beta.

Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Devils CEO Scott O'Neil resigns after 8 years leading HBSE - ESPN

asianpostmedia.blogspot.com

PHILADELPHIA -- Scott O'Neil, the CEO of the parent company that owns the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils, has resigned after an eight-year run in which he shepherded The Process and the Prudential Center.

O'Neil announced Wednesday he was leaving Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment after he helped lead scores of projects under the HBSE banner such as the Grammy Museum at the Prudential Center and the creation of a state-of-the-art Sixers complex, both in New Jersey. O'Neil, who previously led Madison Square Garden Sports, said he did not have another job lined up. HBSE did not immediately name a successor.

O'Neil replaced Adam Aron, now the CEO of AMC Entertainment, in 2013 and worked under Sixers and Devils owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer. The owners merged their holdings in 2017 and formed HBSE. HBSE expanded into ownership with other sports and entertainment companies.

"I'm leaving because it's time," O'Neil said by phone. "I remember what it was like when we first walked in here, and to think we've grown this business, over $2 billion in value over six times in eight years, that's what I do. Hypergrowth, super growth. I think that the right person coming in here will be a wonderful steward of this brand for years. But I think I've done what I came here to do."

O'Neil, who recently wrote the motivational book "Be Where Your Feet Are," said he decided around January that he wanted to leave HBSE and he maintains a strong relationship with Blitzer and Harris.

"I cannot overstate how much we value Scott's enormous contributions to the company and how grateful I am for his leadership and partnership in creating a best-in-class culture at HBSE," Harris said. "We know he will find great success in whatever he chooses to accomplish in the future, and we will always be among his biggest advocates."

O'Neil, a Villanova alumnus, also has local ties from a previous job as vice president of sales with the Philadelphia Eagles. He started his career as a marketing assistant for the New Jersey Nets.

The Sixers were eliminated in the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs after they earned the top seed. The Devils have missed the playoffs for three straight seasons.

O'Neil said in 2014 that "we don't use the 'T' word in this organization," referencing tanking, when the Sixers were in the early days of their scrutinized rebuild known as The Process.

The Sixers at the time ranked 29th in attendance, had a minor league facility in a private medical school and no stars, and they soon underwent a metamorphosis that saw them open a swanky new complex in Camden in 2016, draft All-Stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons and shoot to the top of NBA attendance. The Sixers also became the first team in the NBA to put a sponsorship logo on player uniforms.

"I think a total transformation in growth of the business, brand and relevance in the city, the country is probably the biggest thing," O'Neil said. "I want people to know that Josh and David care about this organization, care about winning and they put the resources into it."

Sixers CEO Scott O’Neil steps down after 8 years on job - NBA.com

asianpostmedia.blogspot.com

Scott O’Neil had served as CEO for the Philadelphia 76ers for the last eight years.

After eight successful years guiding Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE) through exponential growth and expansion, CEO Scott O’Neil has elected to step away from the organization in order to pursue new opportunities. O’Neil has over two decades of leadership experience within the sports and entertainment industry, including his most recent tenure with HBSE, a leading sports and entertainment company centered around marquee assets, the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers and NHL’s New Jersey Devils.

“I would like to thank Josh Harris and David Blitzer for inspiring, engaging and empowering me to bring together the most talented executive team in sports and entertainment,” O’Neil said. “Josh and David are extraordinary leaders, partners and friends. Their commitment to our teams, brands, employees – and most importantly – their commitment to serving the City of Philadelphia, Newark and Camden – made our success together possible. To be trusted with the opportunity to steward epic brands – as well as buy, build, integrate, acquire, and grow complimentary businesses to create HBSE as it is today – has been the ride of a lifetime, one for which I am humbled and grateful.”

“HBSE is the best organization I have ever been a part of, with the highest degree of difficulty I have ever encountered, and the most fun I have ever had, because every day brought a new opportunity to learn and develop. This company has grown through a culture of extraordinary teammates willing to be innovative, having the discipline to do the work, and a courage to lead from the front. While I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of my time here, I am even more excited to build, grow, and drive my next platform.”

“Scott has accomplished so much on behalf of the organization in a relatively short amount of time, driving our growth, culture, and commitment to strengthening the communities in which we live, work, play, and win,” said HBSE Co-Founder Josh Harris. “I cannot overstate how much we value Scott’s enormous contributions to the company and how grateful I am for his leadership and partnership in creating a best-in-class culture at HBSE. We know he will find great success in whatever he chooses to accomplish in the future, and we will always be among his biggest advocates.”

“We are immensely grateful to Scott for his partnership over these past eight years of unprecedented growth,” said HBSE Co-Founder David Blitzer. “His ambition, strategic outlook, and innovative mindset have been and will continue to be instrumental to the long-term success of our business. On behalf of everyone at HBSE, we thank Scott for his transformational leadership, drive and passion, and we look forward to celebrating his future successes.”

Under O’Neil’s leadership, HBSE was built from a single-entity team, the Sixers, to an all-encompassing sports and entertainment franchise that spans two professional teams, an e-sports business, a leading arena and entertainment business, and several growth and venture investments across sports technology. He led the Sixers to sign the first jersey patch sponsorship in “Big Four” sports history, oversaw construction on the largest and most technically advanced training complex in professional sports, the Philadelphia 76ers Training Complex, established an industry-leading Innovation Lab, and became the first U.S. professional sports franchise to acquire a world-renowned esports team. Additionally, he became acting Co-Managing partner for Elevate Sports Ventures, a sports and entertainment agency he helped to create in a partnership between HBSE, Live Nation Entertainment | Ticketmaster, the San Francisco 49ers and Oak View Group. He also helped create HBSE Venture Fund and HBSE Real Estate to round out the portfolio.

During his time with HBSE, O’Neil and his team were recognized for his impact in creating an innovative and best-in-class workplace and workforce, with the Sixers being named one of the “Top 50 Cultures” in the nation by Entrepreneur (2017). O’Neil’s leadership and role as a change agent within the sports and entertainment industry was widely lauded, as Philadelphia Magazine recognized him one of the “Most Innovative Leaders” in Philadelphia. Sports and technology outlet SportTechie named O’Neil as 2017’s “Most Innovative Executive,” and most recently, the Sixers were bestowed five Clios, including one for “Team of the Year” in 2021.

Thomas Bach arrives in Tokyo for Olympics on July 8; COVID on rise - ESPN

asianpostmedia.blogspot.com

TOKYO -- IOC President Thomas Bach will arrive in Tokyo on July 8 and spend three days in isolation before holding meetings leading up to the opening of the postponed Tokyo Olympics on July 23, Tokyo organizers and the the International Olympic Committee said Wednesday.

Bach is also expected to visit Hiroshima on July 16, at the same time as his vice president and colleague John Coates is to visit Nagasaki.

Visiting dignitaries often pay visits to the cities as a reminder of the nuclear attacks by the United States in August 1945 during World War II.

Ahead of Bach's visit, COVID-19 cases are rising in Tokyo.

On Wednesday, Tokyo reported 714 new cases -- the highest in five weeks and the 11th straight day in Tokyo that cases are higher than they were seven days previously.

Only about 12% of Japanese are fully vaccinated. A quasi-state of emergency ends on July 12 with the possibility that government officials may have to reinstate another state of emergency that could be in force when the Olympics open.

In controversial remarks made just over a month ago, Coates was asked if the Olympics could be held during a state of emergency.

"The answer is absolutely yes," he replied.

The IOC has pushed on with the Olympics despite strong local opposition, partially because it earns almost 75% of its income from selling television rights. That income has stalled during the pandemic.

Officially, Japan is spending $15.4 billion on the Olympics, although government audits suggest it's much more. All but $6.7 billion is public money.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government officials have already decided to take the Olympic torch relay off streets in Tokyo from July 9 through July 16. It is unclear what form the relay will take from July 17 until the opening ceremony on July 23 at the National Stadium.

The relay began in March in northeastern Japan. It has faced numerous detours, scaled-back programs, and has been run at times only in public park spaces to avoid spreading the virus.

Organizers and the government are under pressure to improve screening after a Ugandan team member tested positive earlier this month at Tokyo's Narita airport and was quarantined there.

But the rest of the nine-person team was allowed to travel more than 500 kilometers (310 miles) on a chartered bus to their pre-Olympics camp in the western prefecture of Osaka.

Three days later, a second Ugandan also tested positive, forcing seven town officials and drivers who had close contact with the team to self-isolate. The team members were quarantined at a local hotel.

Concerns escalated after it was announced that both Ugandans had the delta variant of the virus, which is believed to spread more easily.

8 best charcoal grills of 2021, according to experts - NBC News

asianpostmedia.blogspot.com

The first thing someone looking to buy a new grill might notice is the sheer number of seemingly great options available. But what’s ideal for one grill master’s backyard might not be for another — especially given that grills tend to come in three main styles: pellet grills, charcoal grills and gas grills.

Grills are built with speed, convenience, price and quality in mind, but when it comes to flavor, it’s hard to beat a charcoal-fired grill, according to Chris Lilly, a world championship pitmaster and spokesperson for Kingsford. “When fat renders from meat slowly simmering over the fire, the juices hit the hot coals and create a charred moisture,” he said. “This directly affects grilled food flavor that you can’t replicate in any other grill type. Food over fire equals flavor and charcoal maximizes the grilled taste in foods.”

SKIP AHEAD Best charcoal grills

Charcoal grill features to shop

A charcoal grill is similar to a gas grill in that it’s typically used for direct grilling, where food is cooked directly over high heat, explained Robbie Shoults, co-owner of Bear Creek Smokehouse. The main difference is the heat source: A gas grill uses several gas burners, while a charcoal grill is powered by charcoal. But that doesn’t mean all charcoal grills are built the same — there are many other standout features to keep in mind while comparing different models:

  • The metal and single vs double-walled insulation. The thickness of metal that the grill is made from is measured as the “gauge.” As the gauge number increases, the material thickness decreases and this makes comparing grills easy, explained Lilly. “Thicker metal makes for a longer lasting grill and better insulation,” he said. (Since you ideally want a thicker metal, you want to look for grills with a lower gauge.) “Some companies offer double walled grills which are the best insulation, resulting in steady cooking temperatures,” he added.
  • Ceramic enamel. Ceramic cookers offer some of the best insulation on the market and result in rock steady temperature control, according to Lilly. “Once the ceramic shell is heated up, it stays hot for a long period of time and gets the most out of a charcoal fire,” he said.
  • Gas assist. Gas-assisted charcoal grills are usually fueled by a small screw-on propane tank. “This allows you to fire up the charcoal with a quick twist of the knob as opposed to using a charcoal chimney or other lighting methods,” Lilly said.
  • Gravity feed. With this type of grill, charcoal is poured into a vertical hopper. “As the fire burns, more charcoal is automatically fed — thanks to gravity — to the fire, resulting in long cook times,” he explained.
  • Wi-Fi Bluetooth compatible. With this type of charcoal grill, the grill temperature can be set, changed and displayed on a smartphone through an app-based application. A probe can send internal meat temperature readings, giving you the freedom to do other things instead of being chained to the grill.
  • Grill thermometer. According to Lilly, it’s always better to have a grill thermometer with numerical readings instead of indicators of “Smoke, Barbecue, Grill” so the exact temperature is clear. However, he noted that there are plenty of aftermarket grill thermometers available to swap out a substandard thermometer that a model might come with.
  • The ash catcher. To make your grilling experience easier, you want an ash collector that is larger and easier to empty when filled. You can't just leave ash in the bottom of the grill piling up or you won't get a good fire going, but some grills don't give you a way to get them out and it's a pain, according to Lisa McManus, executive editor of equipment testing and ingredient tasting at America's Test Kitchen. She recommended looking for a good ash removal system, like Weber offers. “We love that it has an ash catcher shaped like a saucepan attached to the bottom; you just unhook it and dispose of the ashes,” she said. “You can do several grilling sessions before the ash catcher fills up; it's a generous size.”

Best charcoal grills

To help find the best model that will bring the most joy to your backyard barbeque, we consulted expert pitmasters for recommendations on the best charcoal grills across different needs.

Best charcoal grill overall: Weber

1. Weber Performer Deluxe Charcoal Grill

This 22-inch charcoal grill holds up to 13 burgers with 363 square inches of cooking space and offers extra work space for meal prep as well as a “One-Touch” cleaning system with an aluminum ash catcher for easy post-grilling cleanup. “It's a terrific kettle-style grill (round with a domed lid),” said McManus. “It’s set in a sturdy, useful rolling cart, with a bin for charcoal and an automatic ignition starter, as well as trays to hold the coals so you don't need a separate lighter and chimney starter.”

Best overall affordable charcoal grill: Weber

2. Weber Original Kettle Premium Charcoal Grill

For McManus, this 22-inch grill is the “best buy” when it comes to budget-friendly yet reliable charcoal grills. “It's the same grill as the Performer, but without the cart and other features,” she said. “It's a classic for a reason. You can do basic grilling, or fancy stuff like smoking or barbecue or grill-roasting, no problem.”

The porcelain-enameled lid and bowl are both rust- and heat-resistant and the grate is 363 inches and holds up to 13 burgers. “Weber grills get the most bang for your buck,” agreed Shoults. “Any of the basic Weber Premium Kettle grills can get the job done. These grills get to your desired grilling temperature, distribute heat evenly and [are] easy to clean up.”

Best affordable portable charcoal grill: Weber

3. Smokey Joe Premium Charcoal Grill

From tailgating to camping, this lightweight charcoal grill is made to be on the move with a “Tuck-N-Carry” lid lock and handle that also doubles as a lid holder when you’re grilling so that the lid doesn’t touch the ground. The cooking area is 147 square inches — it fits six burgers at a time — and the porcelain-enameled lid and bowl come in six different colors. “It's a mini version of our winning grill,” said McManus.

And for those with little ones, there’s a matching Smokey Joe toy version for the tiniest of grill masters to enjoy.

Best high-end portable charcoal grill: Everdure by Heston Blumenthal

4. Everdure By Heston Blumenthal CUBE Portable Charcoal Grill

The Everdure grill by Heston Blumenthal is a great tagalong for the beach, lake or picnic, Shoults explained. “The small, 17-inch ‘Cube’ is lightweight and offers a ton of grilling possibilities,” he said. The compact design features bamboo prep and food-grade storage trays, chrome handles that stay cool to the touch while grilling and a powder-coated steel body with heat protection for grilling on different surfaces.

Best high-end smart charcoal grill: Everdure by Heston Blumenthal

5. Everdure By Heston Blumenthal 4K Charcoal Grill & Smoker

The Heston Blumenthal Grill and Smoker leads in innovation and is a treat for the tech-savvy, according to Shoults. “The patent-pending ‘Fast Flame’ ignites with the touch of a button and the grill even connects to Bluetooth so that you can keep an eye on your grilling at all times,” he said.

The 21-inch grill and smoker combo is also pet-and kid-friendly with a cool-to-the-touch exterior and auto-locking lid. The temperature ranges from 230 to 725 degrees Fahrenheit and it can be controlled through your smartphone or the LED touch glass display. “This grill also has top and bottom vents that create a balanced air flow to grill meats evenly,” added Shoults.”The technical capabilities of this grill sends it well above your standard grill while the sleek and masculine graphite finish is just another reason we have all the heart eyes for this grill.”

Best high-end kamado charcoal grill: Big Green Egg

6. Large Big Green Egg

Although the Big Green Egg is at a higher price point than other traditional charcoal grills, “these ceramic cookers are almost a must for any backyard kitchen,” Jonathan Fox of Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q previously told us. This versatile ceramic kamado-style charcoal grill might be worth the investment for you, given its ability to grill, roast, smoke, bake and sear.

The seven different sizes to accommodate different yard spaces all share the innovative egg-shape design, but the most popular is the Large, which can cook up to 12 burgers, six chickens vertically and seven racks of ribs vertically. And with a lifetime warranty, you can worry less about rust or how it holds up to the elements.

Best affordable kamado charcoal grill: Char-Griller

7. Char-Griller E56720 AKORN Kamado Charcoal Grill

In addition to 314 square inches of cast iron grill space, this porcelain-coated steel grill also has a removable 133-square-inch warming rack and two folding metal trays. The grill’s body is made from 22-gauge steel with a double wall insulation and porcelain-coated interior that can cook at 200 to 700 degrees Fahrenheit. There’s also adjustable top and bottom dampers, an easy-to-dump ash pan and locking wheels for moving it in your yard.

Best smart charcoal grill accessory: Weber

8. Weber Connect Smart Grilling Hub

You don’t have to have the budget for a smart grill in order to enjoy the benefits of one, according to McManus. She recommended skipping the smart grill and instead investing in a smart thermometer to track temperatures from your phone instead of needing to stay nearby or open the grill lid. “Thi is important when you're grill-roasting or doing low temperature, slow barbecue,” she said. “Every time you open the lid to check the food you let out all the heat, so it's good to monitor the temperature from afar and these also ensure that you don't overcook (or undercook) the food.”

This Smart Grilling Hub does just that with the ability to set your desired level of doneness, remote wifi access and food readiness countdown as well as flip and serve notifications.

How to shop for the best charcoal grills

The experts we consulted recommended keep these aspects in mind while considering which charcoal grill to make officially yours:

  1. Look at the lid. According to McManus, you absolutely want a charcoal grill that comes with a lid as you greatly limit what you can make without one. Also look for ones that leave plenty of room underneath for cooking taller foods when closed, like a 14-pound turkey.
  2. Check out the airflow. When it comes to controlling the temperature of a charcoal grill, it’s all about the air inflow and outflow from bottom and top dampers, explained Lilly. The more airflow, the hotter the fire. You also need to restrict the airflow to reduce the cooking temperature as needed. “Check the metal joints and seals to make sure they are flush with no cracks,” he said. “It’s impossible to control the grill temperature when air and smoke are free-flowing through all of the crevasses. The tighter the seals, the more temperature control you have when cooking.”
  3. Look for adjustable vents. In addition to making sure that the vents seal, you also want to ensure the vents are adjustable on the lid and base, McManus added. “They give YOU absolute control over the heat of the fire: More air getting in equals a hotter fire [and] less air getting in gives you a cooler fire that will cook slower, which is good for low, slow barbecuing like ribs and brisket.”
  4. Do a “shake test.” Lilly also recommended giving the grill a “shake test” by wiggling it side to side while holding the shelf or grill handle to make sure it’s sturdy and well-built. “Rap on the grill with your knuckles, checking the metal thickness,” he said. “The thicker the metal, the more thermal insulation and the longer it will last. Look for lower gauge metal for more thickness.”
  5. Maximize your budget. While it doesn’t make sense to splurge on some products, McManus explained that a charcoal grill is one purchase that you want to invest in. “[A cheap grill is] going to get beat-up, misshapen and fall apart when you try to move it around, and you'll only have to replace it,” she said. She explained that although her favorite Weber charcoal grill is about $150, “I've had these grills last a decade in good shape. So it pays off.”
  6. Know your intended use. If you have a large family or plan on grilling for large gatherings, the cooking area size you’ll want is going to be different than someone who doesn’t like to entertain. “Make sure you have sturdy grates that are roomy enough to fit the food you want to cook,” said McManus. “You don't want to have to cook 15 things one at a time. She recommended grills with round grates that are 22 inches in diameter, “which is a nice size for a family or midsize gatherings.”
  7. Check the grates. McManus prefers charcoal grills with grates that are easy to lift up if you need to add more coals. “Our favorite Weber has little doors that open on both ends of the grate for this,” she said.

The pros and cons of charcoal grills

The number one biggest benefit to cooking with a charcoal grill is the flavor it gives food. “You can't beat charcoal-grilled flavor,” said McManus.

But, a close second is the heat and airflow control a charcoal grill gives you. “With gas grills, usually all the vents are across the back of the grill, so heat and smoke flow out the back and there's nothing you can do about it,” McManus said. “Gas grills give you far less control over where the smoke and heat goes than with charcoal.”

Other pros that Shoults appreciates include the diverse price points and sizes. “Charcoal grills come in every price range, making it easier for [grillers] to find their perfect fit,” he said. “You can also buy a countertop grill for easy portability while folding grills are excellent for camping or hunting trips and kettle grills are great for apartment balconies.”

A potential downside is that charcoal grills are a bit slower to get started. “You have to set up the chimney, start the coals and wait 20 to 30 minutes before you can cook,” she explained. “With gas, you just switch it on like a stove.” However, she noted that with both styles, it's best to preheat the grates for about 15 minutes with the lid down to get the whole grill box good and hot. And scrub the grates every time — otherwise your food will taste like soot and you will not get great grill marks.

Asia markets mixed; drugmaker Hutchmed debuts in Hong Kong - CNBC

SINGAPORE — Major Asian markets were mixed by the close on Wednesday, with oil prices continuing to rise. Meanwhile, China released its data on manufacturing activity in the morning.

Mainland Chinese stocks rose by the afternoon. The Shanghai composite was up 0.50% to close at 3,591.20, while the Shenzhen component jumped 1.08% to 15,161.70.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index was subdued, edging down 0.41% in the afternoon. China-based drugmaker Hutchmed made its debut in Hong Kong, trading around 64.50 Hong Kong dollars ($8.31) — up more than 60% from its offer price.

In a Hong Kong exchange filing, China's biggest bad-debt manager Huarong Asset Management said it cannot estimate when it will publish its 2020 financial results. The firm said "auditors will need more information and time to complete" the audit procedures. It said, however, that failure to provide the results does not constitute a default.

There have been concerns over the creditworthiness of the state-owned firm, which saw its dollar bonds plunge earlier this year. Trading of its shares has been suspended since April 1.

Meanwhile, China's official manufacturing Purchasing Manager's Index (PMI) grew at a slower clip in June — hit by a resurgence of Covid-19 cases in the major export province of Guangdong that led to port disruptions.

The reading eased to 50.9 in June from 51 in May, according to Reuters. The 50-point mark separates growth from contraction.

"The latest survey readings are consistent with our view that the pace of growth will wane this year now that the economy is already above its pre-virus trend," Julian Evans-Pritchard, senior China economist at Capital Economics, wrote in a note. "Foreign demand for Chinese consumer goods is likely to drop back further over the coming quarters as vaccine rollouts allow global consumption patterns to normalise."

Other Asia markets

Japan's Nikkei 225 closed just below the flatline to 28,791.53, and the Topix edged down 0.3% to 1,943.57.

South Korea's Kospi was up 0.3% to close at 3,296.68. Tech stocks jumped, with SK Hynix up 2% and LG Electronics rising 1.55%.

Over in Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 was up 0.16% to 7,313.00. Major mining names closed in positive territory, with Rio Tinto jumping 1.31% and Fortescue Metals jumping nearly 1%.

Oil prices continue to rise

Oil prices continue to rise this week after hitting their highest level since 2018 last week.

On Wednesday afternoon during Asia hours, international benchmark Brent crude futures rose 0.16% to $74.88 per barrel, while U.S. crude futures jumped 0.42% to $73.29 per barrel.

"For Malaysia, in contrast to India, the rise in global oil prices will be a welcome development," Mizuho Bank wrote in a note on Wednesday. Malaysia is a key oil exporter in the region. Its 2021 budget assumes oil prices of $42 a barrel and prices are now above $73 a barrel, creating some extra revenue for the country, the bank noted.

Currencies

The U.S. dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of its peers, was at 92.057 — jumping from levels above 91.7 seen earlier this week.

The Japanese yen traded at 110.47 per dollar, stronger than levels above 110.8 seen earlier in the week. The Australian dollar changed hands at $0.7516, down from levels around 0.758 seen earlier this week.

HSBC says Asia faces 'bumpy road' ahead as Covid cases remain high, but vaccine rollouts offer hope - CNBC

Asia's struggle against the coronavirus is far from over but an expected pickup in Covid vaccine distribution in the coming months may ease the situation, according to investment bank HSBC.

India has been the worst-hit country this year, suffering from a devastating second wave where cases rose sharply between February and early May. Though the daily reported infection numbers have come down significantly from a peak of over 414,000 cases in a day, the South Asian nation is still reporting on average 50,000 cases a day.

Countries like Indonesia, Malaysia and Nepal have faced a sharp rise in cases recently while infection levels remain elevated in other places. Nations such as Singapore, South Korea, Japan and China have also faced pockets of outbreak lately.

"It's easy to think, or tempting to think, that we're through it all, but reality is, if you look at Asia ex-India, we're looking at record numbers of daily infections right now," Frederic Neumann, co-head of Asian economics research at HSBC, said Wednesday on CNBC's "Squawk Box Asia."

"There's still a terrible human toll in many parts of Southeast Asia and, actually, still in India," he said.

Delta variant

Experts say that the closely watched coronavirus mutation known as delta variant is partly responsible for the surge in new cases seen in many parts of the world. First discovered in India and now present in over 80 countries, delta is said to be more contagious than previous variants.

While it remains unclear if the variant is more lethal than previous strains, its increased transmissibility, particularly in environments with low inoculation and minimal social distancing, implies it will likely infect more people in absolute terms, according to analysts from political risk consultancy, Eurasia Group.

"Countries with younger populations and more humid climates could accordingly experience more severe outbreaks than previous waves, even if the proportions of young people with severe illness remain the same," the Eurasia Group analysts said in a recent note. They added that in many emerging markets there is a growing risk of overwhelmed health-care systems.

Asia is a considerable distance behind North America and Europe as far as vaccines are concerned. Data showed that just over 23% of the population has received at least one Covid vaccine dose, compared with over 40% or more in the other two regions.

"We are by no means through this," HSBC's Neumann said. "That means when we look into the third quarter, there's still a risk of at least pockets of disruptions coming through. We just need these vaccines. We need more supply. We need to roll them out."

Economic recovery

Neumann said that based on publicly available information, HSBC projects that a lot of Asian countries will not reach herd immunity until the beginning of 2022, at the earliest.

"That means, some of the restrictions remain in place, particularly on travel, and that means, unfortunately, still a little bit of a bumpy road for the next several months," he said.

When a country reaches herd immunity, it means the virus can no longer spread rapidly as most of the population will either be fully vaccinated or would have become immune through infections.

In a note, Neumann and other HSBC analysts said that they expect local demand growth in the region to pick up steam over the next six months. That is set to happen on the back of a sharp, expected uptick in vaccine distribution, they said.

Exports remain strong despite ongoing transportation disruptions and supply chain bottlenecks, according to the bank.

"The latter should slowly fade as demand recalibrates towards services and factories catch up on lost time. Still, the crunch has revealed that more investment in capacity is urgently needed – expect capex to soar as the region tip-toes out of the pandemic," the HSBC analysts wrote.

The investment bank predicted Asia, excluding Australia and New Zealand, will grow 6.6% year-on-year in 2021 — compared with a 0.9% contraction last year — and 4.6% in 2022.

The New Reefer Madness? Poison Control Centers Sound Alarm Over “Legal Marijuana” Compound Delta-8 THC. - Forbes

asianpostmedia.blogspot.com

Late last week, the University of Virginia Health System’s Blue Ridge Poison Center issued a troubling warning.

Over the past six months, “dozens” of people, including at least one toddler, had been hospitalized or sought medical attention after consuming products containing delta-8 THC. Doctors hadn’t seen anything like it, as the News Leader reported: in 2020, the state poison center received exactly zero calls related to Delta-8 THC.

As CBS-19 News’s version of the story pointed out, the timing could not have been worse. On July 1, Virginia will become the first state in the South to legalize cannabis products containing delta-9 THC for adults 21 and over.

This means the good citizens of Virginia will be the next populace subjected to a barrage of poison-control bulletins and breathless news items warning about the scourge of edible cannabis products.

Almost all of this should be ignored, or at least put into a much less-alarming context. However, the emergence of delta-8 THC as a weaker and much more widely available alternative to delta-9 presents a complication.

Most of this hand-wringing follows a very familiar script. Alarm over cannabis edibles—which almost always centers the risk to children, even if the sample size is only a few dozen cases in a state with millions of people, as it is in Virginia—is a rite of passage for the legal marijuana industry that’s played out in every other state to legalize.

But with delta-8 THC, there’s a couple extra wrinkles. As things currently stand, delta-8-—chemically similar but considered weaker than delta-9 THC, and generally produced from federally-legal hemp or CBD via a chemical process—is legal under both federal and Virginia law. Though some states ban or restrict delta-8, it’s nevertheless widely available at smoke shops, gas stations, convenience stores, and online.

That means that delta-8 THC products are almost all unregulated—which means there’s no guarantee of product safety, purity, or integrity. And states are catching on.

Virginia’s delta-8 alert echoes similar bulletins from poison control centers in other states. In April, the Michigan Poison Center at Wayne State University in Detroit—where cannabis dispensaries have operated for years—reported that delta-8 is popping up in products marketed or labeled as CBD.

Delta-8 THC is not poisonous. But, like delta-9 THC, consuming too much can lead to unwelcome side effects: lethargy, low heart rate, and other signs of being uncomfortably high.

In the legal cannabis industry, delta-8 presents a challenge as well as an opportunity. If delta-8 THC is mostly legal coast-to-coast, why would anyone bother paying more in taxes for a legal delta-9 product?

Product safety, for one—and, in a twist, positioning stronger but lab-tested delta-9 THC products as “safer” (or at least more predictable) is one strategy the legal industry is pursuing.

Delta-8 is still a “highly unregulated industry,” as Jeff Gray, the CEO and co-founder of Santa Cruz, California-based cannabis testing company SC Labs told Politico earlier this year.

Gray went even further, suggesting that delta-8 THC products present a risk for another bout of EVALI, the vape-related acute lung illnesses that killed 68 people and sickened about 3,000 more in 2019 and early 2020.

But the problem here isn’t delta-8 THC. It’s product safety, according to Chris Adlakha, a PharmD who owns several compounding pharmacy businesses in Texas—including one, Elevated Wellness, that sells delta-8 products.

Adlakha recommends delta-8 products to patients and customers reporting pain, insomnia, anxiety, and other symptoms for which there is “immense anecdotal evidence” that delta-8 works, he said in a statement provided to Forbes. For people who aren’t interested in a more intense psychoactive experience, delta-8 is a fine alternative to delta-9.

“The bigger issue,” Adlakha said in a statement provided to Forbes, “is that, as a hemp product, the government does not require third party testing, which, like other hemp based products, including CBD, may result in exposing consumers to harmful impurities, which could be 100% avoided with proper manufacturing and testing methods.”

Requiring companies manufacturing and marketing delta-8 products to test their wares and print clear and accurate labels—in the same way that adult-use cannabis companies making oils, edibles, or other products with delta-9 THC must do—is one solution to the problem highlighted by poison-control centers in Virginia, Michigan, and beyond.

However, none of this will stop the most common cause of someone—young or old—consuming too much cannabis product and calling the emergency room in a hazy panic. No law can prevent adults from carelessly leaving their cannabis products out where their children or dogs can eat them—and no law can prevent adults, children, or anyone else from foolishly taking too much and overdoing it, if that’s their wont.

In other words, the problem isn’t delta-8 THC. As usual, it’s people. But since it’s a lot easier to create a moral panic around cannabis than it is personal choices, here we are yet again.

Destiny 2 Seasonal Challenges Week 8 (Season of the Splicer) - Polygon

asianpostmedia.blogspot.com

Destiny 2: Season of the Splicer’s Week 8 Seasonal Challenges arrived on June 29, and in this guide we’ll show you how to complete them all.

Some Season 14 weekly Challenges are more involved than the others. Check out the descriptions below for advice on the fastest way to complete these Seasonal Challenges — particularly Before the Dawn, Speedhack, and Crack and Decrypt 3 in Season 14 — before they expire on Aug. 24.

Before the Dawn

Challenge: Speak to the Splicer Servitor and complete Path of the Splicer 8, and open Corrupted Chests in Expunge. 20 Corrupted Chests.

This mission will take you a while. The Path of the Splicer section should be easy enough, but 20 Corrupted Chests will take time. You need Corrupted Key Codes to unlock Corrupted Chests, which appear at the end of Corrupted Expunge missions. Corrupted Key Codes drop randomly from enemies, so you’ll need to just play the game until you have enough.

Speedhack

Challenge: Complete the Override mission in 15 minutes or less.

This Challenge depends on your matchmaking. If you get a good enough team, you’ll be able to complete an Override in 15 minutes fairly easily. If you get a bad team, you won’t make it. The more Overrides you complete, the more likely you are to finish this one.

Crack and Decrypt 3

Challenge: Unlock Conflux Chests by completing Override missions. Decrypt Season of the Splicer Engrams at the Prismatic Recaster. 45 Conflux Chests. 45 Engrams.

For this one, you just need to complete 45 Override missions with valid keys. If you’ve upgraded your Splicer gauntlet, you’ll also likely get plenty of Splicer Engrams to decrypt. If not, use your Data to make your own.

Vexterminator

Challenge: Defeat Powerful Vex anywhere in the system. Earn bonus progress for defeating them in Override or Expunge.

You’ll just need to kill a lot of Vex for this one. If you’ve been keeping up with Season of the Splicer, you shouldn’t have much trouble completing this.

Primeval Patina

Challenge: Acquire the Primeval Patina ornament for Null Composure.

Once you have the Null Composure fusion rifle, you’ll just need to complete the Gambit-specific quest. You need to kill enemies with fusion rifles and Solar weapons. You’ll also need to complete Gambit matches.

Trial by Firing Squad

Challenge: Win multiple rounds in the Trials of Osiris. Seven wins.

For this, you just need to win seven Trials of Osiris rounds. That’s much easier said than done, but that’s all you’ll need to do.

Vanguard Vestments

Challenge: Acquire the Vanguard Vestments ornament for Null Composure.

Like the Primeval Patina, you’ll need to acquire Null Composure and then take up the Strike-specific mission for it. You’ll need to complete Nightfalls and kill enemies with fusion rifles.

Make sure to finish all of these and the rest of the Seasonal Challenges if you want to complete the Master of All Challenge by Aug. 24, which rewards a Large Bright Dust Pile.

Tokyo snags Asian listing in 'Goldilocks' space between NYSE and Hong Kong - Nikkei Asia

TOKYO/SINGAPORE -- The Tokyo Stock Exchange has welcomed its first listing by an Asian company under a framework providing greater investor access, with more than two dozen other foreign names weighing the Japanese market as an alternative to faraway New York and unstable Hong Kong.

Singapore-based Omni-Plus System debuted Japanese depositary receipts on the TSE's startup-heavy Mothers market. The company, which sells plastics for such products as appliances and vehicles in Southeast Asia and Japan, is only the second foreign company to list JDRs, after American chip design company Techpoint's 2017 offering.

The listing comes as the TSE, with government encouragement, leads Tokyo's bid to become a magnet for Asia's growing ranks of unlisted startups, particularly Southeast Asian names.

"The number of companies from Singapore, Taiwan and elsewhere in Asia that are waiting in the wings is growing rapidly," said Yoshihisa Harada at Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking, which has provided support for JDR offerings since the system's inception. The bank is now working with more than 30 foreign businesses.

In terms of listing merits, Tokyo stands as a just-right "Goldilocks" destination. Hong Kong's status as one of the region's premier financial centers is being threatened by political factors, while Singapore lacks Japan's deep base of retail traders. Companies that would risk being overshadowed by billion-dollar startups in the U.S. could still make a splash in Japan.

More businesses have been setting their sights on the Mothers market, which is popular among individual investors. Trading volume on the board totaled roughly $400 billion last year, more than 40 times the tally in similar startup-oriented markets in Hong Kong and Singapore.

The relatively high price-earnings ratios seen on the Mothers board are attractive to startups hoping for big valuations. Tokyo listings look like a realistic option for Asian companies considering partnerships with Japanese businesses or seeking cheap financing there.

"Now that we've seen the first Asian JDR listing, more Asian companies may seriously consider listing on the TSE," said Chiharu Goto, chief financial officer at Spiral Ventures, a Japanese venture capital firm that invests in companies in Southeast Asia and India.

Depositary receipts are securities representing shares in a company that are traded outside that company's home country. Global names such as Toyota Motor and Sony have American depositary receipts listed in New York, for example.

JDRs offer some advantages over direct listings in terms of investor access. Trading systems at brokerages in Japan treat Tokyo-listed shares of overseas companies as foreign stocks, which investors need a special type of account to trade. JDRs, by contrast, can be traded on the same account as normal Japanese stocks, and may be traded on margin as well.

The TSE looks to draw foreign companies, whether through JDRs or other routes, by promoting cross-border listings. Taiwanese startup Appier Group debuted directly on the Mothers market in March.

This goal is seen as a key step in Tokyo's quest to boost its stature as a center for international finance. Only four overseas-based companies were listed on the TSE at the end of 2020, making up 0.1% of the total -- a far cry from Singapore's 34% or Hong Kong's 7%.

The bourse has had some difficulties with foreign companies in the past. Asia Media, the first mainland Chinese company to list directly on the TSE, was delisted in 2008 after a top executive was found to have misappropriated funds.

This has driven a greater focus on transparency and investor protections. Now, companies with JDRs are bound to similar disclosure requirements as listed Japanese businesses, including securities and governance reports. The TSE also recommends that companies appoint Japanese-speaking investor relations representatives.

Jacksonville man to be resentenced in 8-year-old’s killing - WJXT News4JAX

asianpostmedia.blogspot.com

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville man is set to be resentenced Tuesday in the murder of an 8-year-old girl, a case that has wound its way through the legal system for the past 15 years.

Rasheem Dubose, now 37, was originally sentenced to death in 2010 after a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder and shooting deadly missiles in the July 2006 killing of DreShawna Davis.

Despite upholding his conviction, the Florida Supreme Court overturned Dubose’s sentence in 2017.

Davis was killed July 27, 2006, when a hail of gunfire her struck her family’s home. Police said her uncle was the intended target of the shooting, which was described as payback for the robbery of Dubose.

Dubose, whose gun was found to have fired the bullet that killed Davis, was later arrested along with his older brothers, Tajuane and Terrell. All three were charged with her murder.

While Dubose’s siblings were convicted and ultimately sentenced to life in prison, the jury in Dubose’s case deadlocked 11-1. When the case was retried, Dubose was convicted and sentenced to death.

The Florida Supreme Court threw out the death sentence for Dubose in 2017 because the jury was split 8-4. State law requires that a jury’s recommendation be unanimous for a judge to impose the death penalty.

Heat advisory in effect until 8 pm Wednesday | RiverheadLOCAL - RiverheadLOCAL

asianpostmedia.blogspot.com

A heat advisory is in effect in the local region until 8 p.m. tomorrow, the National Weather Service said in a statement early this morning. Heat index values may reach up to 104 across the advisory area, the weather service said.

The advisory area includes most of Long Island, taking in the entire north shore of Suffolk County as well as Nassau County, New York City, southern Connecticut, northeast New Jersey and the lower Hudson Valley,

The highest index values will occur during the afternoon and early evening hours, according to the advisory.

The weather service said a heat advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time.

There is a low chance of some portions of the advisory area reaching 105 heat index values today, which may result in the issuance of an excessive heat warning, the weather service said.

Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk. Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures.

People who work outdoors should take frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Riverhead Town will open a cooling center at the Senior and Human Resource Center at 60 Shade Tree Lane today and tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Heat stroke is an emergency, the weather service said. In cases of heat stroke, call 911.

According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heat stroke, the most serious heat-related illness, “occurs when the body becomes unable to control its temperature: the body’s temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down. Body temperature may rise to 106°F or higher within 10 to 15 minutes.”

Extreme heat can also cause heat exhaustion, heat cramps and rashes. Visit the CDC’s website for more information about signs and symptoms of heat-related illness.

Be sure to check on elderly family members and neighbors during hot weather.

Dogs and cats can suffer from the same problems that humans do in hot weather, the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said. These health concerns include overheating, dehydration and even sunburn.

  • Never leave your animal alone in a vehicle. Even with the windows open, a parked automobile can quickly become a furnace.
  • Limit exercise. Your pet may slow down when the weather heats up, so the best time for exercise is in the early morning or evening, but never when it’s especially hot or humid.
  • Take care not to let your dog stand on hot asphalt, his body can heat up quickly and his sensitive paw pads can easily burn.
  • Never trim your pet’s coat to the skin, which can rob your dog of his protection from the sun.
  • Always provide plenty of shade and cool, clean water for animals kept outdoors. A properly constructed doghouse is a must if your dog lives outdoors.
  • Bring your cat or dog inside during the hottest part of the day.

Asus’ pocket-sized Zenfone 8 arrives in the US for $629 - The Verge

asianpostmedia.blogspot.com

The Zenfone 8, Asus’ well-specced and compact competitor to the iPhone 12 mini, has launched in the US. The company is currently selling two versions of the phone on its website. There’s a model with 128GB of storage which will eventually sell for $629 once its early bird pricing of $599 expires on July 13th, while the other has 256GB of storage and costs $699. Both are equipped with 8GB of RAM and are compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile’s networks, but not Verizon.

We liked the Zenfone 8 when we reviewed it last month. Its 5.9-inch display makes it a relatively compact device in comparison to the rest of the Android market, and its 120Hz refresh rate and Snapdragon 888 processor mean it feels snappy and responsive to use. Its smaller size means its battery life is only okay, and its camera performance could be better, but those might be acceptable compromises if a compact phone is your priority.

Unfortunately, the larger Zenfone 8 Flip, which comes with a flipping camera mechanism that turns its three rear cameras into selfie shooters, isn’t currently planned for a US release. In Europe, the 8 Flip costs €799, compared to €599 for the regular Zenfone 8.

Spread of Delta Variant Prompts New Lockdowns in Asia - The New York Times

Countries across the Asia-Pacific region are scrambling to slow the spread of the more infectious Delta variant, reimposing restrictions and stay-at-home orders in a jarring reminder — for societies that had just begun to reopen — that the pandemic is far from over.

In Australia, outbreaks of the variant have forced four major cities — Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Darwin — into strict lockdowns. On Monday, the Malaysian government said nationwide stay-at-home orders would be extended indefinitely. And Hong Kong officials banned flights from Britain, where cases of the Delta variant, which was first identified in India, are rising fast.

In Bangladesh, soldiers are preparing to patrol the streets to enforce stay-at-home orders, with new cases rapidly approaching their early April peak. “The Delta variant of Covid-19 is dominating,” said Robed Amin, a health ministry spokesman, adding that testing suggested the strain was responsible for more than 60 percent of new cases.

The lockdowns and restrictions have deflated hopes across the region, where many countries avoided the worst of the pandemic’s initial spread last year. Now, weary residents are frustrated by what some describe as their countries’ pandemic regression, as other parts of the world edge toward normalcy.

Outside Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s largest city, a restaurant owner, Marcus Low, bemoaned the fourth lockdown of the pandemic. Daily infections in Malaysia peaked in early June, but even after weeks of lockdown, new cases have dipped by only 5 percent over the past two weeks, according to New York Times data. Only 6 percent of the country’s 33 million people are fully vaccinated.

“My restaurant is known for its hospitality and shared dishes, the antithesis of social distancing,” Mr. Low said. For his and other small businesses struggling to survive, this lockdown “might be the last straw,” he said.

Others blamed slow vaccination drives for a return to restrictions.

Sydney is one of four major Australian cities now in lockdown.
Loren Elliott/Reuters

“If we were able to get a really high vaccination rate, that changes the game completely,” said Hassan Vally, an associate professor in epidemiology at La Trobe University in Melbourne. With less than 5 percent of Australia’s population fully vaccinated, he said, “in some ways, where we’re at now is no surprise.”

The Delta strain is one of several “variants of concern” identified by the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Though estimates of its infectiousness differ, the variant could be 50 percent more contagious than the already faster-spreading Alpha variant, which emerged in Britain last year, health officials say.

Studies have shown that Covid-19 vaccines are still largely effective against the Delta variant, though protection is significantly lower for those who are partially vaccinated. But the experiences of several countries show that the Delta variant can spread rapidly through the unvaccinated, including children.

“Anywhere you carry out vaccination, the disease will be pushed into the unvaccinated population,” said Raina MacIntyre, a professor of global biosecurity at the University of New South Wales in Sydney.

Countries that have vaccinated relatively high percentages of their populations are moving ahead with reopening plans. In Britain, where the Delta variant now accounts for almost all new cases, officials say they still plan to lift most remaining pandemic restrictions on July 19. New cases there have more than doubled in the past two weeks, but officials believe that the country remains well protected, with nearly half the population fully vaccinated.

“While cases are now ticking up, the number of deaths remains mercifully low,” the country’s health secretary, Sajid Javid, said on Monday.

In Ireland, Prime Minister Michael Martin announced on Tuesday that the planned return of indoor drinking and dining by July 5 would be delayed because of concerns about the spread of the Delta variant.

Once the restrictions are lifted, only patrons who are fully vaccinated or have already recovered from Covid-19 will be allowed to dine inside. Forty-eight percent of Ireland’s residents have received at least one vaccine dose so far, according to the Our World in Data project at the University of Oxford.

Experts say that as long as the virus continues to circulate, it can acquire mutations that may present new challenges. In India, where a devastating second wave this spring caused thousands of deaths daily, Maharashtra state has reimposed partial stay-at-home orders in response to the emergence of what has become known locally as “Delta Plus,” described by scientists as a sub-lineage of the Delta variant.

Indian health officials have expressed concern that Delta Plus could spread even more easily in a massive population of 1.4 billion, with less than 5 percent fully vaccinated. In an effort to increase vaccine supplies, the country on Tuesday authorized the use of a fourth vaccine, Moderna. “There is the possibility of the third wave,” said Maharashtra’s chief minister, Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray.
