Jacksonville man to be resentenced in 8-year-old’s killing - WJXT News4JAX

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville man is set to be resentenced Tuesday in the murder of an 8-year-old girl, a case that has wound its way through the legal system for the past 15 years.

Rasheem Dubose, now 37, was originally sentenced to death in 2010 after a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder and shooting deadly missiles in the July 2006 killing of DreShawna Davis.

Despite upholding his conviction, the Florida Supreme Court overturned Dubose’s sentence in 2017.

Davis was killed July 27, 2006, when a hail of gunfire her struck her family’s home. Police said her uncle was the intended target of the shooting, which was described as payback for the robbery of Dubose.

Dubose, whose gun was found to have fired the bullet that killed Davis, was later arrested along with his older brothers, Tajuane and Terrell. All three were charged with her murder.

While Dubose’s siblings were convicted and ultimately sentenced to life in prison, the jury in Dubose’s case deadlocked 11-1. When the case was retried, Dubose was convicted and sentenced to death.

The Florida Supreme Court threw out the death sentence for Dubose in 2017 because the jury was split 8-4. State law requires that a jury’s recommendation be unanimous for a judge to impose the death penalty.
