Men's Varsity 8 Has Best Finish Ever at IRA National Championships - Drexel Dragons

WEST WINDSOR, N.J.- The Drexel men's rowing team concluded its time at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships, which took place on Friday, May 28, and Saturday, May 29, on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. The Varsity 8 finished fourth in the C Final, which placed the team 16th overall. It was a good weekend for the squad as the Second Varsity 8 won its final race for a 13th place finish overall, while the Third Varsity 8 was 14th overall at the event.
 
Saturday Finals
In the B final race, the 3rd Varsity 8+ posted a time of 6:37.927 to take second place. Drexel's Lois Krall boat finished 3.9 seconds behind Wisconsin (6:33.973) and two seconds before George Washington (6:39.167). 

In its C final race, the 2nd Varsity 8+ finished four seconds above Temple (6:43.223) to win its race. The Sandra Lee Sheller II boat crossed the finish line in 6:38.263.

The Varsity 8+ competed in the C final and finished fourth, edging Colgate (6:30.629) by eight-tenths of a second. The Lois Krall III shell finished with a time of 6:29.823.

The Varsity 4+ raced in heat 2 of the finals and finished in fifth place with a time of 7:28.442. In the last 100 yards of the race, Drexel jumped in front of Fairfield to beat it by seven-tenths of a second.   

Friday Semifinals
In the first race of the semifinals, the Drexel Varsity 8+ raced in the Lois Krall III boat and finished with a time of 6:43.111 for sixth place in its heat. The Varsity 8+ will race in the C final on Saturday.
 
In the 2nd Varsity 8+ race, the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat crossed the finish line in 7:00.610. The time edged Holy Cross by nine seconds and put the Dragons in fifth place. The 2nd Varsity 8+ will also race in the C final on Saturday. 
 
In the first heat of the 3rd Varsity 8+ race, the Lois Krall boat finished with a time of 6:39.916 to place third. With the third-place finish, the Third Varsity 8+ will race in the B final on Saturday. 

Due to inclement weather, the Men's Varsity 4+ semi-final events were canceled. On Saturday, the Varsity 4+ will only race in the grand final.
