MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's lacrosse team defeated the St. John's Red Storm, 9-8, in overtime at Valley Fields on Wednesday afternoon.

Griffin Fleming scored the game-winning goal one minute and 34 seconds into the first overtime period on a pass from Connor McClelland to give the Golden Eagles their first conference win of the year.

Redshirt freshman Devon Cowan led MU (2-7, 1-6 BIG EAST) with three goals and one assist while six other Golden Eagles scored one apiece.

St. John's (1-7, 0-7 BIG EAST) went up 1-0 early on but MU responded with goals from Chris Kirschner, Peter Henkhaus and Holden Patterson to take a 3-1 lead. The Red Storm scored the final two goals of the quarter and held MU scoreless for the final 8:27 of the frame.

Cowan netted his 21st goal of the year and first on the afternoon on a pass from McClelland to open the scoring in the second quarter. Mason Woodward's first goal of the season sandwiched a SJU goal and allowed the Golden Eagles to head into the halftime break with a 4-3 lead. Sean Richard saved five shots in the first two quarters to help keep the Red Storm offense at bay.

Cowan kept the offense going in the second half, scoring again less than four minutes into the third quarter to give his team a game-high two-goal lead. Red Storm attacker Joe Madsen scored a pair of goals in a three-minute span in the third quarter to tie the game and the two teams headed into the final quarter knotted at 6-6.

The Red Storm scored again to complete a 3-0 run and take a 7-6 lead in the fourth quarter. The lead didn't last long, however, as Cowan completed his hat trick to tie the game and Garrett Moya scored three minutes later to give MU an 8-7 lead. SJU tacked on one more with three minutes to play, a goal that tied the game and led to an eventual overtime period.

MU won the face-off in overtime and never gave up possession, tallying multiple shots before the Fleming game-winner.

The Golden Eagles outshot the Red Storm 54-34 and won 15-of-21 face-offs.

Mike Madsen, Joe Madsen and Jonathan Huber scored two goals each for SJU and goalie Brody Agres saved a game-high 19 shots.

Next up for Marquette is game at Providence on Saturday, April 17. The opening face-off is set for 10 a.m. Central.
