Baseball Suffers Tough Losses vs #8 Catawba to Open SAC Play - Lenoir Rhyne College Athletics

Hickory, N.C.--The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team lost two tough games to open SAC play against #8 Catawba. In game one, Catawba tied the game in the top of the seventh before scoring three runs in extra innings to come away with a 6-3 win. In the nightcap, the Bears fell 5-4 despite hitting three home runs.  Drue Galassi and Nick Clarno each hit two home runs on the day. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Game One Final: #8 Catawba 6, Lenoir-Rhyne 3 (8 innings)
Game Two Final: #8 Catawba 5, Lenoir-Rhyne 4
Records: #8 Catawba (3-0, 2-0 SAC),  Lenoir-Rhyne (2-2, 0-2 SAC)

STATS OF GAME ONE:

  • Nick Clarno got the Bears on the scoreboard with a solo shot with one out in the bottom of the 2nd. It was Clarno's first homerun as a Bear.
  • After the Indians got an unearned run in the top of the third, the Bears responded with a two-run two-out home run by Will Jones
  • Alex Shirazi pitched six innings just allowing 2 runs (1 earned) with four strikeouts in the no decision. 
  • Catawba's Zack Miller tied it up with a solo home run off Bears closer Ben Friebel in the bottom of the seventh. 
  • Indians scored three runs in the top of the 8th to capture the win. Jeremy Simpson went 3-4 including a two-run triple in the top of the 8th.
  • Sawyer Strickland got the win in relief for the Indians after tossing three scoreless innings and only allowing one hit. 

STATS OF GAME TWO: 
  • Tanner Moyers got his first career start for the Bears in game two. Moyer had a rocky start, giving up three runs (two earned) in the first inning. After the first inning, Tanner only allowed two hits and struck out six in his last five innings but suffered the tough-luck loss.  
  • Galassi was the offense early for the Bears as he hit his second homerun of the season with a solo shot in the bottom of the third then led off the 5th with a double and scored on a Will Jones single. Galassi added his second home run of the game and third of the year in the bottom of the 9th.
  • Clarno hit his second home run of the day with a solo shot in the bottom of the 8th.
  • Bears got scoreless innings out of bullpen by Ian Foggo, Michael Allen, Jackson Reid

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • For conference play this year, the teams will play eight of the twelve teams in four games series instead of the typical three-game series like years past. 
  • Jones's home run in game 1 was his 5th career home run for the Bears. 
  • Though four games, Galassi is hitting .500 with 3 home runs and 6 RBIs for the Bears.
  • After getting 11 innings without an earned run from the bullpen last Sunday, the Bears bullpen gave up six earned runs in just five innings on Saturday. 
UP NEXT:  Teams will conclude the four game series tomorrow. The first pitch of game 1 will be at 1:00 PM.
