An 8-year-old boy turned his hobby into a fundraiser for a Bergen County police department to outfit its police dog with a protective vest.
Mason Duffy, of Mahwah, began painting wooden pallets with the American flag last spring during the coronavirus shutdown. He didn’t set out to make money from the patriotic project.
“The overwhelming response he received was incredible with people looking to purchase them from him,” according to a social media post from the Little Ferry Police Department, which will soon have a K-9 unit.
Mason, whose parents MaryBeth and Kevin are former Little Ferry residents, decided to use the approximately $4,600 he made from selling 66 paintings to support local police K-9 units.
“I like dogs because they are cute and I wanted to help them,” he told WABC-TV.
He previously donated to the Mahwah Police Department’s K-9 unit and a unit in Morris County, according to police.
“Thank You Mason for all your Hard Work and Dedication and funding protective vests for Police K9 Units!!!,” Little Ferry police wrote on Facebook.
