A new small-batch ice cream shop whose menu is mostly dedicated to flavors made with popular Asian ingredients has opened in the same Convoy Street plaza as Friend’s House Korean and Handoo Korean BBQ. Sunday Ice Cream is the second venture in the neighborhood for owner Nancy Chi, who opened Bing Haus in 2016 and helped introduce trendy Asian desserts like rolled ice cream and mochi doughnuts to San Diego.
Chi, who sold the cafe last year to focus on launching the creamery, is part of a group that recently took over operations at Pho Duyen Mai, one of the better Vietnamese restaurants in the Kearny Mesa area.
Her menu for Sunday Ice Cream includes classics like vanilla, strawberry, and Oreo but also Thai tea, Vietnamese coffee, matcha, taro ube, black sesame, and injolmi, inspired by a Korean rice cake snack dusted with roasted soybean powder. Its scoops come in cups, cake cones, or homemade waffle cones and bowls.
Chi tells Eater that she’ll be expanding the offerings to include sundaes and more vegan flavors made with coconut or oat milk as well as having the ice cream available in pints for retail and wholesale to restaurants.
