Police concerned after 'recent uptick' in south Seattle home invasions targeting Asian people - KOMO News

Police are looking into a couple of home-invasion robbery attempts — one of which led to an exchange of gunfire between the homeowner and suspects — in Beacon Hill that occurred over the past week.

No injuries were reported in either incident, according to the Seattle Police Department (SPD). Police said the robberies follow a similar trend of recent crimes involving Black males targeting people of Asian descent.

"Though many of the suspects in these pattern robberies have been arrested and remain in jail, detectives are concerned regarding the recent uptick in similar cases," the SPD wrote in its blotter post.

The first recent robbery occurred Monday near the intersection of Beacon Avenue South and South Graham Street, the SPD said. Officers arrived and found a male victim who said he had just returned from a casino and while he was walking home was approached by "several males with guns," the SPD added.

The suspects forced him to open his front door and then ransacked the home looking for valuables before stealing cash and fleeing the scene, according to the SPD.

The second incident involved two separate attempts at the same house shortly after 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, according to the SPD. The reported attempted home invasion happened near the intersection of Beacon Avenue South and South Ferdinand Street, the SPD said. Police added the homeowner said three men tried to break down his door but were unsuccessful, and the suspects drove away.

The second attempt at the house occurred shortly after 12:25 a.m. Thursday, when four males returned and tried to break down the front door with a sledgehammer, according to the SPD. The homeowner said he was asleep when he heard the banging and once he woke up he armed himself with a rifle, the SPD said. When the suspects tried to enter the home, the man shot at them and they fired back as they retreated, eventually speeding off in a vehicle, the SPD added.

Police said it's unknown if any of the suspects were shot during the incident. Officers found bullet damage to the living room and bedroom windows, the SPD said.

Police said they have not located the suspects or suspect vehicle in either case. Both scenes were processed for evidence and robbery detectives are leading the investigation, according to the SPD.

Police ask anyone with information to call the SPD's violent crimes tip line at 206-233-5000.
