Five people were arrested Sunday following an attempted burglary that Plano police say is part of a string targeting Asian Americans in the community.
Five burglaries in Plano have been connected to the group since late October, according to a police spokesperson, and investigators noted they targeted Asian Americans in both Plano and Frisco. No specific subgroups were targeted, according to a spokesperson.
Those in the alleged crime ring would knock on doors in the middle of the day, and if no one appeared to be home, they would pry the door open, according to police. Sunday, they attempted a similar crime but, in the process, woke up three residents who had been napping. The residents called 911, and police arrived in time to arrest the five burglars.
Juan Pinto-Rodriguez, 32; Adrianna Abello-Ruiz, 24; Luis Tafur-Tovar, 33; Helmer Patino-Calderon, 43; and Jeisson Tafur-Tovar, 29; were each charged with engaging in organized criminal activity, a first-degree felony. They are all being held on bonds between $50,000 and a little more than $100,000, according to Collin County jail records. Jeisson Tafur-Tovar was also charged with evading arrest. All five were issued immigration detainers by the Department of Homeland Security, as well. No attorneys for those arrested were listed.
Collin County has one of the highest concentrations of Asian Americans among Texas counties, and Texas is home to the third-most Asian residents of any U.S. state, according to 2019 estimates from the Texas Demographic Center. Asian Americans in Texas were targeted in other crimes recently, including a hair salon shooting and an identity theft scam, consistent with a nationwide rise in anti-Asian hate incidents since 2020.
