Asian Games champion Palak Gulia and Olympian Manu Bhaker will resume India’s hunt to obtain quotas for the Paris 2024 Olympics at the Asian Shooting Championships 2023 in Changwon, the Republic of Korea, from Tuesday.
Live streaming of the Asian Shooting Championships 2023 will be available in India on Olympics.com.
The 15th edition of the continental championships will be held at the Changwon International Shooting Range. Shooters from over 30 Asian nations will compete for 24 direct Paris 2024 Olympic quota spots. Two quotas will be up for grabs in each of the 12 Olympic shooting events.
Palak Gulia, who won the gold medal in the women’s 10m pistol at the Asian Games, will be gunning to secure India’s first Paris Olympics quota in the pistol events.
Manu Bhaker topped the qualifying round in the 25m pistol at the Asian Games and helped India win the gold medal in the team event. However, she missed out on an individual medal.
Esha Singh, who claimed individual silvers in the 10m pistol and 25m pistol, will only compete in the 25m event in Changwon.
Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar will feature in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions. With four medals across the team and individual events, Tomar was India’s most successful shooter at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou.
Since India have already obtained a maximum of two quotas in the 50m rifle 3 positions, Tomar cannot add to India’s Olympic quotas at the Asian championships even if he manages to finish in the top two.
So far, India have obtained seven quotas for the Paris Olympics.
The men's 50m rifle 3P quotas have been secured by Swapnil Kusale and Akhil Sheoran and the women's quota was secured by Sift Kaur Samra.
With Olympic quotas obtained, Kusale and Sheoran will look for medals in their events. Samra will compete for ranking points only (RPO).
India have one quota each in the men’s and women’s 10m air rifle event through Rudrankksh Patil and Mehuli Ghosh.
Similarly, India obtained one quota each in men’s and women’s trap events through Bhowneesh Mendiratta and Rajeshwari Kumari. India are yet to secure a Paris Olympic quota in pistol and skeet events.
While Ghosh will not compete at the Asian championships, Mendiratta, Rajeshwari Kumari and Patil will compete under RPO.
The quota places for the Olympics are allocated to the National Olympic Committees (NOC), who have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games.
Athletes' participation at the Paris Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024, except when quota places are achieved from the Qualification Ranking for the Olympic Games (QROG). These quota places will be awarded to individual athletes and may not be changed by the NOC.
Each country can obtain a maximum of 24 quotas (two per shooting event). A total of 340 shooters (170 per gender) will compete at the Paris Olympics.
