The Indian men’s hockey team will take on Pakistan in its final group match of the Asian Champions Trophy hockey 2023 at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday.
The India vs Pakistan hockey match is scheduled to start at 8:30 PM IST and will be live streamed in India.
IND vs PAK hockey fixtures have produced some pulsating contests over the years. However, world No. 4 India will fancy their chances against a young Pakistani side, who will be under more pressure to perform with a place in the semi-finals at stake.
A draw vs India would guarantee world No. 16 Pakistan a place in top four but a loss against their arch-rivals may see Pakistan lose out if Japan beat the People’s Republic of China earlier in the day.
On the other hand, India have already assured themselves of a place in the semi-finals after edging out defending Asian Champions Trophy champions Republic of Korea 3-2 in their previous encounter.
The Indian men’s hockey team opened its campaign with a 7-2 win over China and a 1-1 draw against Japan. They blanked Malaysia 5-0 in their third match. India are the only unbeaten team in the tournament so far.
While India are on top of the Asian Champions Trophy hockey points table with 10 points from four matches, Pakistan are fourth with five points from as many matches.
Pakistan lost to Malaysia 3-1 in their opener before holding Korea and Japan to stalemates. The Pakistani men’s hockey team beat China 2-1 for their first win on Monday.
India and Pakistan, both three-time Asian Champions Trophy winners, last met at the Asia Cup 2022 in Jakarta and played out a 1-1 draw. Pakistan lead India 82-64 in head-to-heads but India have not lost to Pakistan in their previous 14 encounters.
Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh has scored five goals at the Asian Champions Trophy 2023 so far and is the tournament’s top-scorer. Pakistan’s Muhammad Khan has netted three and will be Pakistan’s main threat going forward.
