Jemele Hill says Asian Americans 'carried the water for white supremacists' as many celebrate SCOTUS decision to end affirmative action in colleges
Jemele Hill, the Atlantic writer who called the Queen a 'colonizer' in the days after her death, has sparked fury again by accusing Asian Americans of 'carrying the water for white supremacy' by celebrating the Supreme Court's decision to outlaw affirmative action.
Hill was replying to a tweet by Asian American mother and activist Yiatin Chu.
She and her fellow activists at the Asian Wave Organization had been fighting to end affirmative action, which they argued negatively harmed Asians students' chances of getting a fair shake in college admissions.
'I told my daughter that today is a big day. They've ended affirmative action. Isn't that it what you're fighting for?' she asked. I said yes,' Chu said.
Hill seized on her comment.
'Can't wait until she reads that you gladly carried the water for white supremacy and stabbed the folks in the back whose people fought diligently for Asian American rights in America,' she said.
She was slammed for the remark by many Twitter users, including some who accused her of trying to 'divide the country along racial lines'.
Among those to criticize Hill's remark was fellow black journalist Jason Whitlock.
'This is the kind of detached-from-reality logic that earned her promotions at the Detroit Free Press, Orlando Sentinel and ESPN. Or was it Affirmative Action?
'There is far more proof of white evangelicals fighting for black American rights than black Americans fighting for the rights of Asians.
'She is just dumb and dishonest. She's exhibit A in why the elimination of Affirmative Action is necessary. Credentialing idiots is not a good idea.'
Others sent Hill videos of black protesters heckling Asian protesters outside the Supreme Court last week.
'I don't think my kids should have to work 3x as hard to get into the same school. That doesn't make me a supporter of white supremacy,' said another.
Hill argued back: 'I agree, but you’re aiming at the wrong target. Making it seem like Black kids are the reason there aren’t more Asians at these elite colleges is a major disservice and pushes such an anti-Blackness narrative.'
Others accused Hill of flat-out racism.
Many Asian Americans embraced the SCOTUS decision.
In a joint statement last week, several Asian American organizations said: 'We are thankful that the Supreme Court has finally ruled against decades of pernicious discrimination against Asian American students. Colleges have abused Affirmative Action for too long.
'Their collective reward and punishment by race deprived the rights of hundreds of thousands of individual applicants.
'Discrimination by group identity is unconstitutional, un-American, and immoral. We call upon universities to comply with the law and stop in good faith to discriminate by race.'
