7 things about Asian grocer H Mart coming to Koreatown - The Dallas Morning News

Asian grocery retailers once concentrated on the East and West Coasts have expanded to Texas in recent years and H Mart — coming to Koreatown — is the latest. It’s the largest Asian grocer in the U.S. with 97 stores in 14 states. Others with stores in Dallas-Fort Worth are 99 Ranch, Mitsuwa Marketplace, JustGo and Hong Kong Market.

With H Mart expanding in North Texas, here are seven things to know about the growing Asian supermarket brand:

  1. The Dallas City Council on Wednesday afternoon approved a grant and tax incentives totaling $3.5 million to build an H Mart supermarket at 2534 Royal Lane in northwest Dallas. H Mart is moving into an older building that needs some work. It will be located on the ground floor of a two-story building that will be gutted in a $28 million project. The store will occupy at least 70,000 square feet. It’s expected to open in mid-to-late 2025. Dallas City Council member Omar Narvaez, whose district includes Koreatown, said Wednesday that residents who want Asian groceries will no longer have to drive up to the suburbs to shop.
  2. H Mart has two local stores open at 3320 K Ave. in Plano and at 2625 Old Denton Road in Carrollton. H Mart’s other stores in Texas are in Austin, Katy and two are in Houston.
  3. It’s a setting for a literary sensation: Crying in H Mart, by Michelle Zauner, has been a New York Times bestseller since it was published in April 2021. Most recently it’s been at or near the top of the paperback nonfiction list since April 2023. Zauner is the lead vocalist for the band Japanese Breakfast. The story is a memoir of a young woman who lost her mother to cancer.
  4. The “H” in H Mart stands for “Han Ah Reum,” a Korean phrase that’s been loosely translated as “one arm full of groceries.”
  5. H Mart isn’t set up for online grocery delivery in Texas yet, but it does have online shopping for items that can be ground shipped to the 48 contiguous states.
  6. H Mart stores sell a lot of other things besides food not found in a traditional Americana supermarket from kitchen appliances to slippers.
  7. The store is stocked for shoppers who cook Korean, Chinese and Japanese cuisines.
