The first race of the 2023 Asian Le Mans Series 4 Hours of Abu Dhabi, begins today at 3:00 PM GST (local time) / 11:00 AM GMT, with the race broadcast beginning 30 minutes prior.
United #22 back on track, fastest in Friday morning test
The #22 United Autosports Oreca LMP2 07 of Philip Hanson, Paul di Resta, and Jim McGuire led Friday morning’s Private Test Session – less than 24 hours after McGuire crashed the car in Thursday evening’s private test.
After hours of hard work to repair the car into the night, Hanson set the fastest time of the morning test with a 1’42.867.
Nico Varrone went quickest in LMP3, aboard the #11 WTM by Rinaldi Racing Duquiene D08 – his fastest time was a 1’49.135.
Varrone is happy to be at Abu Dhabi – after setting a course from Dubai, he soon realized he’d driven in the wrong direction!
Luca Stolz led a Mercedes 1-2 in the black Al Manar Racing #7 Haupt Racing Team Mercedes-AMG GT3, his best lap of 1’50.060 was just 11 milliseconds up on Fabian Schiller’s best in the #10 GetSpeed Mercedes. Encouragingly, Bullitt Racing had a trouble-free session and Valentin Hasse-Clot went third-fastest in their #66 Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT3.
D’station Racing dramas after accident
Charlie Fagg walked away unhurt after an incident during the test, when he lost control of the #77 D’station Racing Aston Martin Vantage GT3 exiting turn 11 and into turn 12, the double-right hander near the circuit hotel.
The D’station Vantage then spun off and hit the Tecpro barriers, inflicting significant damage to the front and rear of the car. What had been the only Aston Martin team not to suffer significant on or off-track dramas prior to the start of the weekend, did not take part in any of the subsequent practice sessions.
Mechanics from D’station and TF Sport were in the garage as early as 5 A.M. today in a “race to get to the race”. The car was repaired in time to take to the track, and 24 hours later, Satoshi Hoshino was able to qualify for today’s race.
Towards the end of the test, James Dayson spun and put the rear of his #63 Inter Europol Competition Ligier JS P320 into the wall. The #2 CD Sport Ligier also suffered a mechanical issue during the session but returned at the end of Free Practice 1.
Indy NXT gives their drivers a positive plug
The official Indy NXT (pronounced “Indy Next”) social media accounts have done a bit of cross-promotion with three of their drivers – Nolan Siegel, Christian Bogle, and Kyffin Simpson – taking part in the championship.
Another week, another race.
Good luck to the three INDY NXT drivers participating in the #4HAbuDhabi this weekend. pic.twitter.com/PQ1L7hyf2k
— INDY NXT (@INDYNXT) February 17, 2023
All three drivers have won a race in Dubai – Simpson in Race 1, Siegel and Bogle together in Race 2.
It’s a story worth exploring, and it will be explored in the coming weeks!
Finally, there are no Balance of Performance (BoP) adjustments from the end of the Dubai weekend to Race 1 in Abu Dhabi, and with no last-minute driver changes, it’s been a relaxing week on that front.
