The United States Football League, set to return in April 2022, has unveiled the eight teams set to take the field in its inaugural season next year.
The teams will be split evenly between two divisions. In the north, the Michigan Panthers, New Jersey Generals, Philadelphia Stars and Pittsburgh Maulers will compete, while the southern division includes the Birmingham Stallions, Houston Gamblers, New Orleans Breakers and Tampa Bay Bandits. All the teams will play this season in one location, which has not yet been announced.
“These eight teams form the core of our initial league membership and will represent an exciting brand of professional football coming this spring," Brian Woods, USFL president of football operations, said in a statement. "We look forward to the start of our inaugural season.”
Each team will play a 10-game schedule, followed by semifinals between the top two teams in each division and a championship game between division winners. Fox Sports is the broadcast partner of the new USFL.
The USFL originally launched in 1983 and lasted three seasons before folding. The upstart spring football league comprised 12 teams and featured some top talent, including Hall of Famers Steve Young and Jim Kelly. However, this edition of the USFL is independent of the former USFL.
