The Marquette University men's basketball team (6-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) wraps up a brief two-game homestand at 8 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Nov. 30 when the program hosts Jackson State (1-5, 0-0 SWAC) in Fiserv Forum. CBS Sports Network features the television broadcast, with Rich Waltz (play-by-play), Pete Gillen (analyst) and Desmond Purnell (reporter) calling the action. The Golden Eagles claimed the only previous meeting with the Tigers, posting an 80-61 win at hone on Nov. 29, 2015. Following Tuesday's outing, MU will hit the road for a pair of outings against rival Wisconsin (Dec. 4) and Kansas State (Dec. 8) before returning to Milwaukee to face nationally ranked UCLA on Dec. 11.
Mitchell, Bench Corps Spark Team In Win
Freshman guard Stevie Mitchell accounted for 11 of the team's season-high 35 bench points in the win over Northern Illinois, providing a first-half spark with all of the reserve corps that helped the team pull away for the victory.
Trailing 7-4 with just over 16 minutes left in the first half, head coach Shaka Smart substituted Mitchell and four other players into the game and that combo turned the deficit into a lead the team wouldn't relinquish the rest of the night.
Mitchell finished 4-of-5 from the floor and also chipped in four rebounds, four assists and a pair of blocked shots in 23 minutes of action. His point total marked his highest since a 14-point effort in the season opener against SIUE and matched his combined point total from the previous five games.
Ighodaro Matches Career High
Forward Oso Ighodaro is a member of the team's regular rotation in 2021-22 for the first time and has responded with some timely contributions early in the year.
In 18 minutes of action against NIU on Saturday night, he chipped in seven points, four rebounds and three assists. He finished 3-of-4 from the field, matched a personal-best with seven points and dished out a career-high three assists.
The Chandler, Arizona, native scored seven points in the season-opening win over SIUE, but had contributed just seven total points over the course of the previous five games before the win over NIU.
Marquette Shooting Mirrors Opponents
Through the first seven games of the year, Marquette's shooting percentages from the field nearly mirrors those of its opponents.
Both the Golden Eagles and opposing shooters have knocked down 43.3 percent of their attempts early in 2021-22. MU is shooting 32.0 percent from long distance in those games, with opponents just slightly better at 31.1 percent from deep.
MU is 6-1 on the year thanks in large part to the free throw line, where the team owns a nearly seven-point advantage (17.7-11) in points per contest from the charity stripe. The Golden Eagles are shooting 71.3 percent as team, and opponents just 60.2 percent.
Kolek MU's Primary Distributor
Guard Tyler Kolek arrived on Marquette's campus with the expectation to provide consistent perimeter scoring to the roster and although he has yet to find his shooting touch, he has made an impact at the offensive end with his distribution ability.
Through games of Nov. 28, Kolek is ranked second in the BIG EAST in assists per game (5.1 apg., 36 total) and eighth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8). He has dished out five-or-more helpers on five occasions. In 21 appearances with George Mason in 2020-21, he finished with 48 assists.
