The Seattle Mariners pounced on starter Humberto Castellanos for 3 runs in the first, but the Diamondbacks answered right back in their half of the inning with 4 runs. It was a see saw battle up until the top of the 6th when the Mariners took control 8-5, courtesy of Kyle Seager’s second 3 run homer of the game. The Diamondbacks bats went mostly silent from the 5th inning on. They had some chances, but overall were 1 for 10 with Runners in scoring position and left 7 runners on base. Caleb Smith had a poor outing and got thrown out at 3rd trying to extend a double into a triple. It was an entertaining game, but they came up short.

T1: Humberto Castellanos took the mound for 2021 Diamondbacks tonight. Three batters in we were reminded this is NOT your 2001 Diamondbacks. Singles by J.P. Crawford and Mitch Haniger gave the Mariners 1^st and 3^rd with nobody out. Kyle Seager then launched the first pitch he saw over the right field wall and a 3-0 Mariners lead.

Ty France sigled and Abraham Toro walked, but Jarred Kelenic bounced into a double play, recording the first two outs of the night 22 pitches in. Jose Marmolejos popped out to 3^rd to end the inning.

B1: Nick Ahmed was rung up by umpire Alex Tosi on a fastball in and off the plate. Trying to work inside against Ketel Marte Marco Gonzalez missed 4 times and walked him. After working inside again to Carson Kelly to get ahead, Gonzalez left a changeup over the middle and Kelly lifted the ball high and into the 1^st row of the left field bleachers to answer the Mariners.

One out later Andrew Young was plunked on the shoulder. David Peralta, getting a rare start against a lefty blooped a double along the left field line. Still trying to come inside against the right-hand hitters, Gonzalez plunked Drew Ellis on the elbow and the bases were loaded for Stuart Fairchild. Stu worked a patient at bat and got ahead 3-1, before taking a fastball down the left field line for a two run double and a 4-3 Diamondbacks lead!

T2: Castellanos got two quick outs against Cal Raleigh and Gonzalez but Crawford laced a double down into the right field corner giving Mitch Haniger an RBI opportunity. But Haniger struck out on 3 pitches and Humberto had his bounce back/shutdown inning.

B2: Ahmed to a pitch on the inside corner and doubled down the left field line. This inside pitch isn’t working for Gonzalez tonight. A visibly frustrated Marte popped out to first base. The ever disappointing Christian Walker couldn’t check his swing on a 3-1 changeup well below the zone and then popped out in foul ground down the first line and the leadoff double was squandered. Still 4-3 D-backs after 2.

T3: A nice 1-2-3 inning for Castellanos, getting a pop out and two groundouts against the middle of the Mariners order. His pitch count is at 51.

B3: Goosebumps yet again on Gonzo blooper being played at top of 3^rd. It NEVER gets old. It’s why I refuse to accept mediocrity. Somehow some way this team needs to figure out how to get back to the post season!Andrew Young struck out on a high fastball above the zone. I wonder if he ever figures out the swing and miss issue. Peralta hit a soft line drive just over the head of the shortstop for his second base hit off the lefty Gonzalez. Fairchild roped a line drive to left but right at Marmolejos for the 3^rd out.

T4: Kelenic hit an infield ground up the middle. Ahmed made a nice backhand, but his off balance throw pulled Walker off the bag and it was a basehit. Marmolejos hit a double into the corner and it was 2^nd and 3^rd with nobody out. He struck out Raleigh and Gonzalez and that was the end of his night. Torey Lovullo went to the lefty Caleb Smith to face the left handed Crawford who already had two hits against Castellanos. Unfortunately Smith fell behind 2-0 and then caught too much of the plate on a ball middle in that Crawford ripped into right for a two run single and a 5-4 Mariners lead.

Castellanos final line: 3.2 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO, 1 HR (2 inherited runners scored)

B4: I’m at 643 words already.  Caleb Smith hit a ball to the wall in right and tried to stretch a double into a triple, but came off the bag on the slide and was called out. Yes, it was DBacky. But then with two outs Ketel Marte went with a change up away and flew a ball into the Mariners bullpen in right to tie the game up at 5.

T5: With one out Toro hit a grounder up the middle that bounced off of second base and into left for a base hit. But a line out to Peralta and a fly ball to Fairchild on the warning track ended the inning with the score still 5-5

B5: Young split the gap in right center for a one out double. But Peralta popped out to left and Ellis grounded out to 3^rd to strand Young. Despite 5 runs scored, D-backs are just 1 for 7 w/RISP and have 5 LOB through 5.

T6: Pinch hitter Luis Torrenz hit a one out single up the middle. Crawford then hit a bloop to center and Ketel went back a step before coming in and the ball dropped as Ahmed tried to get to the ball. After Haniger popped out Seager crushed a center cut slider that hung up into the pool for his second 3 run homer of the game and a 8-5 Mariners lead. Smith’s suspension is 3 days late. In his 2.1 IP he allowed 5 hits, a Walk and a homer, 3 earned runs and two inherited runners scored.

B6: D-backs 3 UP 3 Down against reliever Casey Sadler

T7: Taylor Widener on to pitch in his first relief appearance this year. He worked a scoreless inning allowing just a two out single.

B7: 3 up 3 down again. 8 straight D-backs set down in order since the 5^th.

T8: Jake Faria to pitch the 8^th. He records a 1-2-3 inning including retiring Crawford for the first time in 5 trips to the plate. Still 8-5 Seattle.

B8: Anthony Misiewicz to pitch for Seattle. Young hit a chopper down the first base line and hustled into 2^ndwith a leadoff double. Peralta popped out in foul ground to left. Ellis worked a 7 pitch walk to bring the tying run to the plate with Josh Rojas up. Josh roped a liner to left but it was run down by Dylan Moore for the 2^ndout. Pavin Smith pinch hit for the pitcher’s spot and popped out to short to end the inning.

T9: Sean Poppen pitched a scoreless 9th allowing just a base hit.

B9: Daulton Varsho lead off with a single to right. Ketel flew out to deep left in foul territory. Kelly grounded to Seager at third who appropriately started a 5-4-3 double play to end the game.

Torey mentioned that his plan from the beginning was to “piggy back” Smith after Castellanos so he could face some lefties. But “he was a little inconsistent”. Torey didn’t think running the bases and getting thrown out affected Smith.

He addressed Christian Walker’s struggles, saying he’s well past his injuries, but is missing pitches and there is too much chase.

Carson Kelly also came into the room, and was asked about hitting another homer off a lefty and being a bonafide lefty Killer. “It’s something I’ve always naturally had and it plays into my swing”
