Colonels Go 8-Under In Round Two, Move Up Five Spots At EKU Intercollegiate

In round two, all four scoring players shot under par on the way to a round of 272 (-8), 20 shots better than the morning round.

RICHMOND, Ky. –

Eastern Kentucky's men's golf team shot an 8-under second round team score and moved up five spots to fourth place after the first day of the 2021 EKU Intercollegiate at the University Club at Arlington.
 
EKU rebounded from a 12-over round of 292 to start the day on Friday.  Of the nine team members, only three had ever participated in a collegiate event for Eastern Kentucky, with three transfer newcomers joining two redshirt freshman and a true freshman in their first appearances as Colonels.
 
In round two, all four scoring players shot under par on the way to a round of 272 (-8), 20 shots better than the morning round.  Lake Leroux and Joe Benton led the way with a pair of 3-under rounds of 67.  Willis Gaer and Reese Sexton carded rounds of 1-under 69.
 
With 18 holes left to play on Saturday, Eastern Kentucky (564) is seven shots behind third place Dayton (557) and eight behind second place Jacksonville State (556).  Western Carolina (550) has the lead by six strokes and sits 10-under after 36 holes.
 
EKU has a three-shot lead over two teams tied for fifth – Marshall (567) and Morehead State (567).  Fellow ASUN Conference member Bellarmine (577) is tied for 10th.
 
Leroux sits in fourth place overall with a two-round total of 136 (-4).  He shot a 1-under 69 in the first round.  Benton is tied for 15th with a total of 141 (+1).  Gaer (143) is tied for 26th.
 
Three players share the individual lead.  Kyle Kushnir and Jake Peacock of Western Carolina, and Kyle Schmidt of Dayton are all 6-under (134).
 
For the EKU Intercollegiate, the University Club at Arlington is playing to 6,653 yards with a par of 70. 
 
The final round will be contested on Saturday starting at 9 a.m.
