Triple-A: Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Marlins) 3, Norfolk Tides 2
Norfolk entered the ninth against Jacksonville with a 2-0 lead, but things fell apart at that point. Dean Kremer started the inning and allowed one run before ceding the mound to Fernando Abad with two men on base. Abad surrendered a two-run double — with both runs charged to Kremer — giving the Jumbo Shrimp a walk-off win.
Michael Baumann continued his run of strong starts for Norfolk with six scoreless innings last night. In fact, he only allowed one hit and a pair of walks while striking out six batters. The right-hander’s ERA is now a minuscule 1.64. But Kremer took the loss, giving up three runs in 2.2 innings of work to raise his Norfolk ERA to 6.88.
On offense, right fielder Robert Neustrom was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a solo home run in the fourth. Tyler Nevin was responsible for the Tides’ other run, an RBI single in the sixth. Jahmai Jones went 0-for-4, bringing his average down to .244.
Double-A: Bowie Baysox 8, Somerset Patriots (Yankees) 3
Baysox starter Drew Rom gave up two runs over five innings of work and struck out seven, but it was Blaine Knight who earned the win with three innings of one-run ball in relief. Tyler Erwin pitched the final frame to secure the win for Bowie.
At the plate, Malquin Canelo went 2-for-3 with a double, two-run homer, walk, and four RBI. Cody Roberts had two RBI without recording a single hit, and third baseman Seth Mejias-Brean was 3-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored. Adley Rutschman went 0-for-4 with a walk. The Baysox worked 10 walks as a team, which is something the big league club could learn from.
High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 3, Jersey Shore BlueClaws (Phillies) 0
A pair of Aberdeen pitchers combined to shut out the BlueClaws last night at FirstEnergy Park. Starter Zach Peek got the win, allowing five hits in five innings with two strikeouts. Connor Gillispie followed him to the mound and earned the save, throwing four clean innings with just one walk and four strikeouts.
The IronBirds’ offense was paced by catcher Maverick Handley, who had a two-run home run in the fourth and an RBI single in the sixth. He finished the game with three hits and a stolen base too. Center fielder and cleanup hitter Shayne Fontana had a pair of hits, and second baseman AJ Graffanino had the only other base knock of the game for Aberdeen.
Low-A: Down East Wood Ducks (Rangers) 8, Delmarva Shorebirds 4
The Shorebirds did all of their scoring late in the game, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Wood Ducks at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium last night.
Trailing by five in the seventh inning, Delmarva got their first run of the game on a triple by right fielder Trevor Kehe. Flash forward to the bottom of the ninth — with the score 8-1 Wood Ducks — and the Shorebirds scored a trio of runs.
Jean Carmona started the frame off with a double, then Cristopher Cespedes walked and Kehe singled to load the bases. Carmona scored on a wild pitch, Cespedes scored on a sac fly, and Kehe scored on a groundout. But the rally ended there and the Shorebirds lost by a final score of 8-4.
Starting pitcher Houston Roth took the loss for Delmarva, leaving his record at 6-2 and his ERA at 3.43. He allowed five hits, two walks, and three runs in five innings. He also struck out five batters and gave up a home run.
