Orioles minor league recap 8/6: Dreaming of Adley Rutschman and Grayson Rodriguez in Baltimore - Camden Chat

asianpostmedia.blogspot.com

Triple-A: Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Marlins) 1, Norfolk Tides 0 (F/10) - Game 1

Bruce Zimmermann is on the road back to the majors and after a rehab start in Aberdeen last week, he has been upgraded to triple-A. Zimmermann tossed three scoreless innings with two hits and five strikeouts, which sounds great. But he also walked five, which isn’t as impressive. Hopefully we see Zimmermann in Baltimore soon. They could use him.

The Tides managed only two hits in the entire game, which is why the game went 10 innings despite scoreless outings from Zimmermann, Claudio Custodio (4 IP), and Fernando Abad (2 IP). The game was lost in embarrassing fashion when the ghost runner scored because third baseman Rylan Bannon (MLB Pipeline #20 prospect) made a throwing error on a sac bunt.

Norfolk Tides 1, Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 9 - Game 2

It was a heck of a night for starting pitcher Kevin Smith (#14). Smith pitched five no-hit innings to start this game, but five walks ran up his pitch count so that he couldn’t go for the seven-inning no-no. Smith was replaced in the sixth by Nick Vespi, who almost immediately gave up a single to ruin things.

The Tides more the doubled their number of hits from the first game, but it still wasn’t very impressive. Their only run scored on a fifth inning home run from catcher Chris Hudgins. Everyone’s favorite mid-level prospect, Jahmai Jones (#16), had a single and a walk.

Double-A: Bowie Baysox 4, Somerset Patriots (Yankees) 0

It was Grayson Rodriguez (#2) day in Bowie, and though he didn’t make it quite five innings, it was quite a performance. Rodriguez completed 4.2 shutout innings before the pitch count got him, and he allowed just one single while striking out nine. I really want to see this guy pitch deeper into the game! But I know that isn’t the way.

Adley Rutschman (#1) had just one hit in the game, but he made it count with his 18th home run of the year. Rutschman allowed to baserunners to successfully steal, both of which came after Rodriguez was out of the game.

Cleanup hitter Seth Mejias-Brean also homered and was on base via walk to be knocked in by Zach Watson. The team’s fourth run came in the ninth when fan favorite Toby Welk doubled and later came in to score on a ground out.

Rehabbing Yusniel Diaz (#8) and recent hot shot Kyle Stowers (#22) were both hitless.

High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 8, Jersey Shore BlueClaws (Phillies) 3

It was an offensive onslaught kind of night for the IronBirds. who racked up eight runs on 10 hits. Leading the way from the top of the order was Jordan Westburg (#6), who had two singles, and J.D. Mundy. who reached base via single, double, and walk. Mundy’s OPS is up to .902 since his promotion to high-A. Number nine hitter AJ Graffanino contributed three hits and three RBI and Shayne Fontana had the team’s only home run.

Prospects Gunnar Henderson (#5) and Hudson Haskin (#13) did not join the hit party. Both went hitless but Haskin did score twice after reaching base on a walk and a HBP.

Garrett Stallings (#26) pitched five innings with two runs allowed. He walked two and struck out six, pitching well enough to earn the victory.

Low-A: Down East Wood Ducks (Rangers) 12, Delmarva Shorebirds 1

It was a bad scene in Delmarva last night.

Noah Denoyer started the game with three strong innings for the Shorebirds but it was all downhill from there. Denoyer gave up just two singles while striking out four and walking none. Sadly he came out of the game and the rest of the relief pitchers were very bad.

The only run of the game came in the fifth when Cristopher Cespedes doubled and Trevor Kehe knocked him in with a single. Number 27 prospect Darell Hernaiz had one of the team’s six hits, but he also made a fielding error.

Full box scores for these games can be found at MiLB.com.
