Amid a troubling trend of a rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans, Lincolnwood’s Multicultural Task Force is set to host a program highlighting Asian culture.

On Sunday, Aug. 8, musical performers representing many Asian countries are set to perform at Lincolnwood’s Proesel Park shelter at the corner of Kostner and Morse Avenues. They will entertain the audience, and Mayor Jesal Patel and former Mayor Peter Moy are planning to make remarks.

In the case of inclement weather, the event will move inside to the nearby community center.

Village Clerk Beryl Herman, who also serves as chairwoman of the multicultural task force, said she has heard of distressing experiences for local Asian-Americans.

“I started hearing a lot of very negative comments about the Asian community and a lot of people I knew had had bad experiences with (other) people saying nasty things to them,” Herman noted.

Herman added she knew Skokie had a similar event and thought one would be appropriate for Lincolnwood as well. Asian-Americans represent 28% of the population in the village, according to the United States Census.

“We are a very diverse community,” she said.

After the music and speeches, Herman said there would be a “march of solidarity” around Proesel Park.

Village Trustee Jean Ikezoe-Halevi, who has a Japanese-American background, said she will be in attendance at the event and expressed gratitude for its creation.

“This is very nice of the Multicultural Task Force to come up with this idea to support their Asian-American neighbors at this particular time when people have experienced harassment and prejudice,” she said. “It has been a difficult time.”
