First off the field: Day 8 jaguars.com - jaguars.com

JACKSONVILLE – The pads came off, and the heat returned.

What stayed on for the Jaguars during Day 8 of 2021 Training Camp was the intensity and effort, with the team practicing Friday morning for two hours, ten minutes in shorts and light pads – spiders – in 84-degree temperatures at the Dream Finders Homes Practice Complex.

Among the topics around the Jaguars Friday:

Veteran quarterback Gardner Minshew II, who throughout camp has alternated first-team repetitions with rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Minshew worked with the starters Friday, then had his first media availability of '21 camp.

"We view ourselves as winners, as champions, and that's something that he's building," Minshew said of Jaguars first-year head coach Urban Meyer. "We're working toward that. That's something we're going to earn. He means it. He truly wants to win with every bone in his body.

"He wants to surround himself with guys like that."

Minshew, who started 20 games for the Jaguars over the last two seasons, also on Friday discussed his approach to competing with Lawrence – and his thoughts on the Jaguars selecting Lawrence No. 1 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft this past spring. Coverage of those comments can be found later on jaguars.com.

The Jaguars worked kickoff returns Friday, along with a period of offensive and defensive install. They also held a run-oriented period and multiple 11-on-11 – and situational – periods.

Friday was the first of three consecutive practices that will be open to fans, with a scrimmage to be held inside TIAA Bank Field Sunday at 9:45 a.m. that also is open to the fans. That will be the last open practice of '21 camp.

Defensive coordinator Joe Cullen spoke to the media Friday following practice, as did Minshew and tight end Chris Manhertz. Coverage of those availabilities can be seen on Jaguars Media channels and jaguars.com later Friday.

The Jaguars are scheduled to practice Saturday at 9:45 a.m.

Here's a look at Friday's practice:

PLAY OF THE DAY

The defense continued to have a good week of camp, and the big offensive plays that highlighted the first – non-padded – week of camp have slowed somewhat this week. With the team working in helmets and spiders Friday, the defense continued to look strong. One highlight offensively came late in practice when quarterback C.J. Beathard found rookie wide receiver Jalen Camp for a long touchdown in a team period. Rookie cornerback Tyson Campbell stopped a late-game "situational" drive in the final period when he defensed a pass from Minshew and safety Jarrod Wilson ended practice by intercepting Lawrence in the end zone in the same end-of-game situation.

STANDING OUT

*Cornerback Sidney Jones IV continued a strong camp, breaking up a pass in an early team period from Lawrence to wide receiver Laquon Treadwell. …

*Running backs James Robinson and Carlos Hyde had long runs on back-to-back plays in the run-oriented period midway through practice. …

*Minshew II completed a 35-yard pass to veteran wide receiver Jamal Agnew during the run-oriented period. Minshew had a good practice overall, completing multiple passes downfield to second-year wide receiver Collin Johnson. …

*Lawrence had a good stretch in a two-minute period in team work, completing multiple passes to tight end Ben Ellefson and running back Travis Etienne Jr. …

*Cornerback Corey Straughter and linebacker Quincy Williams had pass breakups two plays apart in a team situational drill, and quarterback Jake Luton had a long pass to wide receiver Collin Johnson in the same drill. ….

*Linebacker Joe Schobert had a pass breakup in a seven-on-seven drill, and Minshew connected with Agnew for another long pass in the same drill. …

*Center Brandon Linder had two strong repetitions against defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton in one-on-one pass rush, and linebacker/defensive ends K'Lavon Chaisson and Lerentee McCray had nice pass rushes during the drill. …

*Linebacker Damien Wilson had a pass breakup off a pass from Minshew late in practice. …

*Defensive tackle Taven Bryan and cornerback CJ Henderson remained on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, with Beathard coming off the COVID-19 list and practicing full Friday. Henderson continued to acclimate toward being activated Friday but did not attend practice.

*Rookie linebacker Dylan Moses remained on the active/non-football injury list.

*Wide receiver DJ Chark Jr. missed practice Friday with a minor injury and wide receiver Phillip Dorsett II remained out of practice. Tight end James O'Shaughnessy returned to practice and tight end Tim Tebow missed practice with an illness.
