• The storm was moving through our region this morning — from Cedar Key toward Gainesville and beyond — during the hours in which we were composing this edition. Impacts in the Alachua County area are expected to include spotty power outages, a slight tornado risk and possible flash flooding, according to the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network. For the most timely information and continuing forecasts, we recommend tuning into our partners via Florida Storms on their website, Twitter or Facebook.

We hope each of you stays safe as the storm passes.

• NPR News: Firefighters Searching Condo Rubble Are Facing Physical And Emotional Tolls. “…on top of the mental and physical tolls, COVID-19 is posing a threat. Six firefighters working at the collapsed condominium tested positive for COVID-19, according to Miami-Dade Fire Chief Alan Cominsky.”

• Florida Politics: Surfside death toll climbs to 36 as investigations and legal working groups form. “Workers have now removed 124 tons of debris from the collapsed site. Throughout Tuesday, impacts from the storm, including over 30-mile-per-hour winds and lightning that forced a mandatory two-hour pause, hampered search and rescue efforts.”

• WLRN: Crestview Towers Residents Still Don’t Know When They Can Return Home. “The Surfside condominium tragedy has left many housing units across Miami-Dade County under scrutiny. Residents of the Crestview Towers condo in North Miami Beach were evacuated last Friday night, following orders from zoning officials to condemn the building earlier that day.”

• CBS Miami: AAA: Florida Gas Prices Top $3 Per Gallon, Highest Since 2014. “Florida gas prices set a new 2021 high on Tuesday. The state average is now $3.01 per gallon, the most expensive daily average price since October 2014.”

• Spectrum News: Gaetz friend Joel Greenberg still helping prosecutors, asks for sentencing delay. “Greenberg’s attorney on Tuesday filed a motion in U.S. District Court, Middle District of Florida for a 90-day sentencing delay, saying that would give Greenberg more time to ‘participate in additional proffers’ through his plea agreement with federal prosecutors, which could impact his final sentence. That cooperation, however, won’t be done by the time he’s due to be sentenced Aug. 19.”
