Alabama head coach Nate Oats has become one of the best recruiters in NCAA Basketball, now at the point of being in contention to land five-star talent. One of his first commitments with the Tide came in the 2019 class in Jaden Shackelford, a top-100 prospect from out west in Hesperia, California.
It was figured that at some point, Shackelford would develop into an impact player and key part of the rotation for the Crimson Tide. It ended up only taking half of his freshman season, as a 28-point effort against Richmond off the bench eventually propelled him to the starting lineup, where he never looked back.
Shackelford ended up with five more 20+ point games in his first year, including three in a row. The guard finished second on the team with 15.0 ppg and was an SEC All-Freshman player. As a sophomore, he played with more surrounding talent, which meant that he wasn’t needed to do much offensively. But Shackelford still ended up producing 14.0 ppg, including a season-high of 27 points against Vanderbilt.
The 6’3 shooting guard will take a lot of three-point attempts, with a career of 35%. But he can drive to the basket and take mid-range shots as well and when he’s on Shackelford can drop 25+ points on any given night.
After putting his name in the NBA Draft process, Shackelford has now decided to part ways with Alabama, who also loses guard Joshua Primo to the pros. They’ll be fine but losing a 15 ppg scoring guard this late in the offseason is a tough blow.
But assuming he’s staying in college, some team is going to get a major addition in the month of July. Here are eight teams potentially with a realistic shot to land Shackelford.
