Just as James Corden puts celebrity guests in the hot seat for The Late Late Show’s “Spill Your Guts” segment, the host himself has come under fire for his recurring bit. Earlier this month, a viral TikTok made by Kim Saira highlighted how “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts”—a confessional game where guests must either answer a high-stakes question or eat an unappetizing snack—perpetuates anti-Asian racism. In Saira’s video, Corden and guest Jimmy Kimmel can be seen referring to Asian delicacies, including thousand-year-old egg, pig blood curd, and balut, as “so terrible” and “really disgusting.” Other “Spill Your Guts” participants have included Kim Kardashian, Gordon Ramsay, Justin Bieber, and Chrissy Teigen.
After her TikTok went viral, Saira started a Change.org petition calling for Corden to apologize for the segment on The Late Late Show, donate money to Asian American organizations, and either completely change the food presented in “Spill Your Guts” or end the series entirely. “In the wake of the constant Asian hate crimes that have continuously been occurring, not only is this segment incredibly culturally offensive and insensitive, but it also encourages anti-Asian racism,” the petition reads. “So many Asian Americans are consistently bullied and mocked for their native foods, and this segment amplifies and encourages it.” As of publication, the petition has more than 45,000 signatures.
Corden addressed this backlash for the first time on The Howard Stern Show earlier this month, vowing to give the segment a culturally sensitive makeover. “I don’t know when we’re gonna do that bit again, but when we do we absolutely won’t use any of those foods,” he said, later adding, “Our show is about joy and light and love, we don’t want to make a show to upset anybody.” Instead, Corden suggested that “Spill Your Guts” might feature theatrically unhealthy options like the “pizza covered in cheeseburgers” that was once presented to Vogue’s Anna Wintour, he explained.
Following Corden’s appearance, Saira told CNN Philippines that she found his mea culpa to be lacking. “In my petition, I have specifically asked for James Corden to publicly apologize on his show,” she explained. “And the reason why I was really specific about that was because I think that it is imperative for his hundreds of thousands of viewers to understand the harm that mocking these foods, rooted in Asian cultures, has on Asian people who still eat them.”
