1 dead, 8 wounded in Savannah, Georgia, shooting - NBC News

One person was dead and eight others, including two children, were injured in a shooting Friday night in Savannah, Georgia, authorities said.

A 2-year-old was struck in the foot, and a 13-year-old was also wounded, Savannah police spokeswoman Bianca Johnson. Those injuries were not considered life-threatening, police said.

The deceased was described only as an adult. Other victims have serious or critical injuries, police said.

The 9 p.m. ET attack happened in a housing development called Hitch Village/Fred Wessels Homes, Johnson said.

Additional details were not available, and it wasn't clear if any suspects were in custody.

"We need your help with info. #SaySomething," Savannah Mayor Van Johnson said Saturday morning in a tweet.

Last evening, #Savannah, like so many other cities in the nation has been victimized by a mass shooting.

Friday night, 9 people were shot including a 13-year-old & a 2-year-with non-life threatening injuries.

The shooting comes amid a yearlong rise in nationwide gun violence and record firearm sales.

Just hours after the Savannah shooting, at least 13 people were injured in a mass shooting in a busy entertainment district in downtown Austin, police in the Texas city said early Saturday.

While no one died, two people were listed in critical condition, interim Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon told reporters near the scene of the incident.

The shooter, or shooters, were not in custody.
