Marble Falls event celebrates outdoor, year-round sculpture display
The Sculpture on Main Street Fest is Thursday-Saturday, May 6-8, and kicks off the year-round, outdoor art display in downtown Marble Falls.
The festival takes place under the covered patio at Lakeside Pavilion, 307 Buena Vista Drive, from 1-5 p.m. Thursday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. It runs in conjunction with the Paint the Town plein air competition, which started May 2 and continues through May 8.
Highland Lakes Creative Arts hosts both events. The Street Fest is free to attend and open to the public. Visitors can meet sculptors and even watch a few work. The Texas Society of Sculptors will hold its Show & Sale over the three days.
The main goal of the festival is to get everyone excited about Sculpture on Main. In 2007, local artists, including Dan Pogue, came up with the concept of a year-round, outdoor sculpture exhibit in downtown Marble Falls.
Organizers invited sculptors from the Highland Lakes and beyond to submit pieces for consideration. Selected sculptures are installed downtown, giving artists exposure and attracting locals and visitors. The pieces are also for sale and rotated out every couple of years. About 15 sculptures are on display.
Since Sculpture on Main started, many other cities and communities across Texas have set up similar outdoor displays.
The nonprofit Highland Lakes Creative Arts now manages the year-round display.
