CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - National Work Zone Awareness Week starts April 8 through April 12.

Summertime is construction season and the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) wants drivers to remember to pay attention while driving through the construction zones and to obey speed limits in these areas.

“We think when anybody gets on the road, that they have a right to get where they’re going safe.”

This year’s highway safety campaign is called “Drive Safe, Work Safe, Save Lives.”

In 2020 there were 251 crashes in work zones, resulting in 2 fatalities and 61 injuries; distracted driving was the cause of 29 of them. In 2019 there were 842 work zone fatalities; of that total, 135 fatalities were workers in work zones.

Wyoming highway patrol recommends adding 10 to 15 minutes to your travel time to safely navigate work zones, to check out road conditions and construction zones along with your routine when planning your trip.

“If we’re safe, you’re safe and we all get to go home.

For more information on finding construction zone on the road, check out: WYDOT - Construction Projects.
