At least one person was killed when a big rig crashed off an Interstate 8 bridge and caught fire Wednesday night near Pine Valley, authorities said.
The semi crashed about 7:50 p.m. while headed west between Buckman Springs Road and Sunrise Highway, according to a CHP incident log. Afterward, that westbound stretch of the freeway was shut down for about three hours.
The big rig plummeted off a bridge and caught fire, sparking a small vegetation blaze in the area immediately surrounding the crash site, Cal Fire San Diego spokesman Capt. Thomas Shoots said. Firefighters were able to quickly contain the flames.
Firefighters feared the truck driver died in the blaze, but were not immediately able to confirm, Shoots said. The CHP confirmed late Wednesday that the crash and fire resulted in a fatality.
Caltrans San Diego tweeted that westbound lanes between Buckman Springs Road and Sunrise Highway — near the U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint — were closed. Traffic was being diverted onto Old Highway 80, according to a CHP incident log, which also indicated damage to the bridge needed to be examined.
