High School Roundup: Huntington Beach boys' swimming improves to 8-0 - Los Angeles Times

The Huntington Beach High School boys’ swimming team beat rival Edison 110-60 on Tuesday in a Wave League opener at home.

The Oilers, who won every event but one, improved to 8-0 overall this season. Edison fell to 5-2.

Freshmen Finneas Tas Palcza and Ryder Dodd each won two individual events for Huntington Beach. Tas Palcza won the 200-yard individual medley in one minute, 58.61 seconds, as well as the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.52. Dodd won the 100 butterfly in 51.38 seconds, and the 500 free in 4:42.55.

Dodd’s older brother, senior Chase Dodd, won the 200 free in 1:44.70. Junior Caden Cunningham captured the 50 free (21.94) and 100 free (48.24).

Huntington Beach coach Ryan Camps said his team is gunning for its first league title since 1938.

“This group of boys has been practicing every day since September to meet our team goals,” Camps said in a text message. “Our meet [Tuesday] was a reflection of their hard work.”

Huntington Beach swims at Laguna Beach on Tuesday in continued Wave League action, while Edison swims at Marina that day.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Edison 2, Corona del Mar 1: The Chargers scored two first-half goals in Tuesday’s Surf League match at Corona del Mar High.

Jackie Peterson scored on Sophia Drake’s assist, and freshman Harley Thomas scored a header assisted by Madison Klasey for Edison (4-7-3, 2-2 in league).

Avery Doherty scored on a long free kick for CdM (6-6-2, 1-2). Goalkeeper Sydney Walls made eight saves.

Edison plays at Huntington Beach on Thursday, while CdM travels to Los Alamitos.

Newport Harbor 0, Marina 0: Senior goalkeeper Jessica Gardner made three saves for the Sailors in Tuesday’s Wave League match at Marina High.

Newport Harbor (8-1-4, 3-0-1 in league) secured its 10th shutout in 13 matches this season.

Marina is now 7-3-3 overall, 1-2-1 in league.

BASEBALL

Los Amigos 8, Bolsa Grande 5: Martin Munoz had three hits for the Lobos in their season opener and league opener Tuesday at Bolsa Grande High.

Josiah Alvarez got the win for Los Amigos, and Juan Gutierrez earned the save.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Newport Harbor 79, Laguna Beach 30: Chase Dionio paced the Sailors with 26 points and eight steals in Tuesday’s Wave League opener at home.

Daelyn Renee had 13 points, four steals and three assists, Cydney Jover had 12 points, five steals and three assists, and Emma Fults chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Newport Harbor (6-2) goes on the road to face Edison on Thursday, while Laguna Beach (5-11) travels to Marina for its next game.

Corona del Mar 61, Fountain Valley 40: Dorothy Schwenck had a team-high 28 points, including five three-pointers, to lead the Sea Kings on Tuesday in a Surf League opener on the road.

Trasara Alexander scored 12 points, Makena Tomlinson added 10 points, and Haley Esquino also had nine points for CdM (9-4).

Kristen Ho had a team-high 13 points, and Margaret Tengan added 11 points for Fountain Valley (6-2).

Saddleback 67, Estancia 22: The visiting Eagles dropped to 2-7 overall and 1-2 in the Orange Coast League with Tuesday’s defeat.

Estancia returns to the court on Thursday against Santa Ana at home.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Estancia 3, Saddleback 2: David Lopez’s goal in the 80th minute lifted the host Eagles over the Roadrunners on Tuesday in an Orange Coast League match with playoff implications.

Kevin Flores and Taylor Demarais also scored for Estancia (5-5-3, 4-1-2 in league, 14 points), which travels to take on Santa Ana (3-7-2, 3-2-2, 11 points) on Thursday.

The Eagles leapfrogged Saddleback (5-4-1, 4-2-1, 13 points) for first place in the league with three games remaining.
