PITTSBURGH - The Duquesne women's tennis team defeated local foe Carnegie-Mellon 8-1 on Saturday morning. The teams played the NCAA Division III format, playing ad, an eight game pro set for doubles and a nine-point match. The Dukes improve their record to 6-4 on the year.
Ana Utrilla-Benito and Amulika Gottiparthy gave the Dukes a quick start in doubles, cruising through a 8-0 victory at the third doubles flight. Ellen Shanahan and Priyanka Mitta followed with a 8-4 win at the seconddoubles flight, giving the Dukes a 2-1 lead going into singles play.
Amulika Gottiparthy was also first off the court in singles, winning 6-0, 6-0 at the fifth flight. Gottiparthy did not drop a game in two matches on the day. Ellen Shanahan won 6-2, 6-0 at the second singles flight, and Priyanka Mitta won 6-1, 6-2, at the sixth flight.
Meredith Lee would win 6-1, 6-4 at the third singles flight, while Ana Utrilla-Benito took a tough 7-6 (6), 7-6 (7) victory at the fourth singles flight. Margot Pessy would win at the top singles flight 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (5).
"We always look forward to playing CMU," said Duquesne Director of Tennis Vanessa Steiner. "This year they ranked top 5 in the Division III national rankings, and to come out and dominate on several courts gave our team lots of confidence. This is a match that we look to build on for the rest of the year and leading up to the conference championships."
