Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Lafayette, 8-6 and 13-12 - NavySports.com

EASTON, Pa. – Navy (8-5, 3-5 Patriot League) dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season after losing both ends of a doubleheader to Lafayette (6-9, 5-7 Patriot League), 8-6 and 13-12, on Saturday afternoon at Kamine Stadium.

Despite the losses, Navy's offense pounded out 23 hits over the two games. Logan Keller (Fr., Longwood, Fla.) paced the Midshipmen with a 6-for-9 day at the plate with five RBIs and his first career home run. Colin Smith (So., Wilmington, Del.) also picked up five RBIs and a home run for Navy while going 4-for-7. Overall, Navy had nine players with a hit over the two games and six players with multi-hit days.

"They were both really hard-fought games," head coach Paul Kostacopoulos commented. "We just did not pitch very well. It was not a well-executed game, we gave up a bunch of 0-2 hits, walked batters, hit batters, we just did not execute on the mound and that is what it came down to today. We had good at-bats, scored enough runs to win, but we just could not execute on the mound.

"I think we were better on Wednesday, we were good today. We just have to keep putting together quality at-bats," Kostacopoulos said about the offense. "Offensively the last few games we have done a pretty good job of bouncing back. We just have to keep moving forward. We have two more games tomorrow and we have to be ready to go."

Lafayette 8, Navy 6

Navy's offense got off to a strong start in the opening game of the weekend with Zach Stevens (Jr., Lexington, Mass.) belting a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. Then in the second inning, Ryan Duffey (Sr., Duxbury, Mass.) drove in a run with an RBI triple and Eduardo Diaz (Fr., Miami, Fla.) followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Midshipmen a 4-0 advantage.

However, Navy's four-run advantage was extinguished with the Leopards scoring four runs on just one hit in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game at four heading into the third inning.

After a scoreless third and fourth innings, the Midshipmen got back-to-back singles from Joe Simourian (Jr., Andover, Mass.) and Colin Smith to start the fifth inning and Stevens just missed his second home run of the day with a sacrifice fly out to the warning track in right field to plate Simourian and regain the lead for Navy.

The Leopards once again answered back and took their first lead of the game with a three-run fifth inning on five hits. Lafayette tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning to grab a three-run lead. Navy tried to rally with back-to-back hits from Colin Smith and Stevens in the seventh inning, which was followed by a two-out RBI single from Keller.

The Midshipmen's comeback attempt came up short as Lafayette got out of the jam allowing just the one run and the Leopards won the opening game of the weekend, 8-6.

Jack Ferguson (Sr., Atlanta, Ga.) suffered the loss after giving up three runs – two earned – on six hits in his two innings of work. In the start, Charlie Connolly (Sr., Wayne, Pa.) allowed five runs on five hits, two walks and four hit batters.

Jake Bloss (2-0) earned the win after throwing 6-2/3 innings allowing six runs on 10 hits. Jacob Ciccone picked up the save after recording the final out of the game.

Lafayette 13, Navy 12

Navy started the second game the same way as the first with a two-run home run in the first inning, except this time Christian Policelli (Jr., Walkersville, Md.) hit the long ball for his first of the season. The Midshipmen's two-run advantage was nullified in the bottom of the opening stanza with a two-RBI double from Dylan Minghini.

In the second inning, Navy loaded the bases with no outs after singles from Nico Valdez (Jr., Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) and Diaz were sandwiched in between a walk to Kyle Rausch (So., Middle Island, N.Y.). With one out in the inning, Colin Smith brought in a run with a walk and Stevens drove in the Midshipmen's fourth run of the game on a groundout.

Keller started the top of the third inning with his first career home run to push the Navy lead to three runs. However, the Leopards answered back with a two-run home run of their own to make it a 5-4 contest after three innings.

The Midshipmen kept using the long ball throughout the first half of the game with Colin Smith launching his second home run of the season to bring in two runs and give Navy the 7-4 advantage in the fourth inning. Keller drove in Navy's third run of the inning as it took a four-run lead.

The long ball was alive well in the second game of the day with Lafayette hitting a three-run home run in the fourth inning to match the Midshipmen's three-run inning as Navy held an 8-7 lead after four innings of play.

After no runs came across in the fifth inning, the scoring returned from both sides with Keller driving in two more runs in the sixth inning to run Navy's lead to three, but Lafayette continued to answer back and the Leopards had two runs of their own cross the plate in the home half of the frame. In the seventh inning, Colin Smith drove in his fourth and fifth runs of the game to regain the three-run edge for the Midshipmen but after being held off the board in the bottom of the seventh inning, Lafayette went off for four runs in the eighth inning to grab a 13-12 advantage.

Just like game one, Navy tried to rally in the ninth inning but left two runners aboard as the Leopards completed the sweep with a 13-12 win in game two.

Trey Braithwaite (Sr., Winchester, Va.) suffered the loss after allowing three unearned runs in the eighth inning. Tommy Goodridge (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) gave up seven runs on six hits in his 3-1/3 innings of work to start the game.

Adam Bogosian (1-0) picked up the win in relief after shutting out Navy for the final two innings.

Navy and Lafayette wrap up the season series on Sunday with two games from Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium starting at 1 p.m.
