Asian-American chefs make cooking videos to combat racism - TwinCities.com-Pioneer Press

Recent events like the shooting of six Asian women in Atlanta have brought attention to racism against people of Asian descent, but Twin Cities chefs and bartenders say they’ve been victims of anti-Asian rhetoric forever.

And they’re doing something about it.

Minnesota Rice is a project in which local Asian-American chefs and bartenders are coming together to make instructional cooking videos, share their stories and teach participants how to make some of their favorite dishes and drinks. The project aims to raise awareness about racism toward the Asian-American community, but also to raise money to support the Coalition of Asian American Leaders, an organization that works to equip and lift up leaders and build across communities toward equity, justice and prosperity.

The tagline of the project is, “Love our people like you love our food.”

The videos are from a who’s who of some of the best chefs in the Twin Cities, including Yia Vang, Christina Nguyen, Ann Kim and more.

Here’s a detailed list of participants and what you’ll learn to cook:

  • Christina Nguyen of Hai Hai and Hola Arepa
Dish: Lemongrass beef grilled in betel leaf with lettuce and herb wraps
  • Yia Vang of Vinai and Union Hmong Kitchen
Dish: Grilled red snapper in banana leaf with sticky rice and tiger bite sauce
  • Ann Kim of Young Joni, Pizzeria Lola, Hello Pizza and Sooki and Mimi
Dish: Korean mung bean kimchi pancakes
  • John Ng and Lina Goh of Zenbox Izakaya
Dish: Old-school Chinese clay pot rice with chicken, Chinese sausage and shiitake
  • Ann Ahmed of Lat 14, Lemon Grass and Khaluna
Dish: Stuffed tapioca pearls with mushroom, pistachio, radish, and peanuts
  • Dustin Nguyen of Tres Leches
Drink: Basil seed Collins with gin, lime, honey, pandan and seltzer
  • Jonathan Janssen of Brother Justus
    Drink: Soy-ginger old fashioned

A subscription to the videos, which will be released every few days throughout the month of May, costs $100.

Craftmade Aprons, a Twin Cities-based company, has designed custom aprons for the Minnesota Rice chefs, which feature trim made with traditional Hmong patterned fabric. A limited number of these aprons are available for sale to the public. For each apron sold, $50 will go directly to CAAL. Aprons can be purchased at the time of ticket purchase or at craftmadeaprons.com.
