#8 Cougars Bounce Back with Sweep of Rutgers-Newark - Kean University - Kean University Athletics

NEWARK, N.J. (4/13/21) – Maddie Carlson finished 5-for-7 with three RBI's, two runs scored, two doubles and a stolen base as the #8 Kean University softball team bounced back with a doubleheader sweep of Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday afternoon.

Paige Metz went 2-for-4 with two RBI's, while Sarah Zengel finished 2-for-3 with two RBI's and a run scored as the Cougars (13-2, 3-2, NJAC) used a six run first inning to propel Kean to a shutout victory over the Scarlet Raiders (0-7, 0-7 NJAC).

Kean notched the bulk of their runs in the top of the first with six runs on five hits. The inning was highlighted by an inside the park homerun from Taryn DiGiacomo, and RBI's from Zengel, Maria Bonfanti and Metz. Metz and Zengel both tallied their two RBI's apiece in the opening inning.

The Cougars added two more runs in the third when Julia Stasil drove in Isabella Polash and later scored when Metz reached on a dropped fly ball. Stasil crossed the dish again in the fifth, when Karly Messina recorded her first career RBI with a fielder choice that allowed the senior to come home.

DiGiacomo improved to 7-1 in the circle with four strikeouts in just three innings pitched. Messina made an appearance, striking out two batters in two scoreless innings.

Kean 6, Rutgers-Newark 4
Carlson went 3-for-4 with three RBI's, while DiGiacomo and Nicole Vassallo both finished 2-for-4 as the Cougars (14-2, 4-2 NJAC) survived late runs from the Scarlet Raiders (0-8, 0-8 NJAC) to complete the sweep in the night cap.

After trailing 1-0 entering the third, Kean tallied five runs on six hits to take a commanding 5-1 advantage. The third inning saw an RBI single from Metz, a three RBI double from Carlson and an RBI single from Zengel. The Cougars increased their lead to 6-1 in the sixth, when Stasil pinch ran for Vassallo and scored on a wild pitch.

Newark got three runs back in the sixth with a three RBI single to cut the Cougars advantage to 6-4. Annabella Marino struck out a batter and earned the decision in four innings pitched, while Heather Clevenger tallied her first career save.  

Head Coach Margie Acker and the Cougars will return to action on Saturday, Apr. 17th, hosting the Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers-Camden for an NJAC doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
