ITHACA, N.Y. – The RIT softball team was swept at Ithaca, 8-0 (5 inn.) and 6-5, in the Liberty League opening doubleheader for both squads.GAME 1 – Ithaca 8, RIT 0 (5 Inn.)
Ithaca jumped on the board with three runs in the bottom of the first and added four more (two unearned) in the third for an early 7-0 lead. The Bombers brought their deciding eight run across in the fifth to seal the win.
GAME 2 – Ithaca 6, RIT 5
- Freshman third baseman Brooke Seifert (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) finished 2-for-4 with two RBI while junior first baseman Brianna Blich was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, but Ithaca scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to overcome a 5-3 Tiger lead and earn the 6-5 victory.
- Ithaca broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but RIT responded with two runs in the top of the sixth. Bilich and senior shortstop Rachel Estrada were each hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before back-to-back singles by junior catcher Jill Vorreiter (Fisherville, KY/Mercy Academy of Louisville) and Seifert brought them home.
- Ithaca re-took a 3-2 lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but RIT plated three in the top of the seventh to build a 5-3 lead. Junior center fielder Hannah Trumble (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) led off with an infield single and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman right fielder Katelyn Koester (Buffalo, NY/Sweet Home) and an infield single by Bilich. Estrada brought Trumble home with an infield single before Barrera brought Bilich home with a single up the middle. Estrada eventually came around on an infield single by Seifert to push the Tigers ahead by two.
RIT is scheduled to travel to Alfred State on Monday (March 29) for a 3:00 p.m. non-league doubleheader.
