AUSTIN, Texas – No. 19 Texas beat No. 12 South Carolina, 8-5, on Sunday afternoon, completing a three-game series sweep of the Gamecocks at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

For Texas (11-5), it is the first three-game series sweep of a ranked opponent since taking down No. 2 LSU at home in March 2019. The last three-game series sweep for the Longhorns occurred last season against Cal State Fullerton.

Each batter in the Texas starting lineup collected at least one hit, with Eric Kennedy and Ivan Melendez registering two each. Zach Zubia and DJ Petrinsky both drove in a pair of runs and Kennedy and Trey Faltine scored two runs apiece.

Tanner Witt picked up his first win of the season after entering in the fifth, striking out six and allowing one run on two hits in three innings of work.

The Longhorns struck early, scoring a run in the first inning after Kennedy was hit by a pitch, then advanced to third after a stolen base and a fielding error. Zubia drove him home with a two-out single to right-center.

South Carolina evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the second, plating one run after loading the bases on two occasions in the frame.

Texas answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly to regain the lead, 2-1. Walks by Faltine and Melendez to open the inning, followed by Cam Williams reaching on a fielding error loaded the bases with no outs. A fly ball to center by Mitchell Daly drove in Faltine, to give the Longhorns the lead.

A home run to lead off the South Carolina third tied the game, 2-2.

Melendez made it 3-2 in the bottom of the third with a double to deep center field that scored Faltine, who had reached on a two-out walk and then stole second. Williams followed with a single to right-center to drive in Melendez, pushing the advantage to 4-2.

Texas scored four more runs in the fourth to break the game open, giving the Longhorns an 8-2 lead. Zubia launched a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to deep center that was hauled in at the wall to score the first run of the inning. Petrinksy followed with a two-run double and was driven on a single by Faltine.

SC added a run in the fifth and two in the ninth to cut into the Texas lead and wrap up the scoring at 8-5.

Starter Kolby Kubichek threw four innings, conceding two runs on five hits while striking out five. Cole Quintanilla pitched a scoreless eighth inning out of the bullpen and Aaron Nixon closed out the game, allowing two runs in the ninth.

The Longhorns will host UTRGV at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday, Mar. 16 at 6:30 p.m. before heading on the road to open Big 12 play with a three-game weekend series against Baylor in Waco.
