HOUSTON, Texas – No. 19 Texas Baseball beat Houston, 8-2, on Sunday to win the series over the Cougars at Schroeder Park. Kolby Kubichek pitched six solid innings to earn his second win of the season.
The Longhorns (7-5) took advantage of 10 walks issued by Houston pitching, including four in the top of the first inning.
Kubichek struck out a career high nine batters in his longest career outing of six innings. He allowed only five hits and was charged with just one run.
The Longhorns took advantage of four walks and an error in the top of the first inning to grab a 4-0 lead. Eric Kennedy, Zach Zubia, Silas Ardoin and Trey Faltine all walked to drive in the first run of the game.
Ivan Melendez hit a ball of the middle that was booted to plate two more runs before Cam Williams chopped an RBI single up the middle to make it 4-0.
The Cougars got a run back in each the second and third innings to trim the Texas lead to 4-2.
Texas scored three more in the fourth on three more walks, a hit batter, an infield single and a sacrifice fly. Austin Todd legged out an RBI infield single to drive in a run before Mike Antico worked a bases loaded walk. Zach Zubia drove in the seventh run with a sacrifice fly to center.
Kubichek got into a bases-loaded jam in the sixth but got a huge strikeout to end the inning with no damage done.
Faltine tacked on an insurance run with a solo homer in the top of the ninth to make the Texas lead 8-2 over Houston.
Jared Southard pitched a scoreless inning out of the bullpen and Cole Quintanilla finished off the final two scoreless frames.
The Longhorns will return to UFCU Disch-Falk Field to host Sam Houston State on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. before welcoming South Carolina for a three-game weekend series.
