Syracuse, N.Y. -- A 49-year-old man has died after an eight-car crash Tuesday morning in downtown Syracuse, according to the Syracuse Police Department.

Officers responded to the intersection of West Fayette and South West streets for a crash involving eight cars at 7:48 a.m., said Syracuse police spokesman Sgt. Matthew Malinowski.

Several people were injured in the crash. The 49-year-old man died after being taken to the hospital, Malinowski said.

An investigation found that a Nissan Altima was being driven east on West Fayette Street and hit several stopped cars in traffic at a red light, Malinowski said.

Police initially said four cars were involved in the crash.

Officers are still investigating the cause of the crash.

Police ask that anyone with information about the crash call 315-442-5148.
