DURHAM, N.C. – Duke clinched the series over Pittsburgh with an 8-1 win on Saturday afternoon at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in downtown Durham, N.C.

Duke (6-4, 3-2 ACC) was lead by senior Chris Crabtree at the plate who went 4-for-4 with two RBI, a double, a home run and three runs scored. Sophomore Chad Knight also had a good night offensively, recording one hit and two RBI.

Sophomore Henry Williams started on the bump for the Blue Devils. Williams, out of Darien, Conn., delivered his best showing during his time at Duke, improving to 2-0 on the season. He allowed just one run on three hits and four walks while striking out 11 in six innings of work.

Duke took the lead in the bottom of the first as senior Michael Rothenberg's sacrifice fly scored classmate Joey Loperfido. An inning later, the Blue Devils added three more to the board from an RBI single by Knight, a hit batter and a walk while bases were loaded. Knight added his second RBI of the day in the bottom of the third as he batted in junior RJ Schreck to make the lead 5-0.

Crabtree sent a 424-foot two-run home run over the right field wall to tack on two more to the Blue Devil's lead in the bottom of the fifth. Pitt was able to get on the board in the sixth with a solo home run, but Duke responded with another run in the eighth for the final score of 8-1.

In relief, redshirt sophomore Jimmy Loper earned the save. The Chesapeake, Va., native went three innings, retiring all nine batters faced and boasting seven strikeouts.

Duke looks to complete the series sweep against Pittsburgh tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the DBAP.

Postgame Notes:
  • Williams recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts in the game, the most in a single game by a Blue Devil this season. He now boasts a team-leading 24 K's for the season.
  • Loper's seven strikeouts were a career-high mark. His 7.1 scoreless innings pitched in relief leads the team.
  • Loper earned the first save of his career.
  • Crabtree's four hits matched his career high set against Troy in June 2018. His three runs scored also matched a career high (at Virginia in March 2019).
  • As a team, Duke struck out 18 batters, tying for the most under head coach Chris Pollard (Feb. 15, 2019 vs. Lehigh).
