Big innings loom large in Memphis' 8-4 loss to Arkansas - Memphis Official Athletic Site

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Memphis Tigers fell 8-4 Wednesday at Baum-Walker Stadium, as the No. 2 ranked Arkansas Razorbacks used a pair of three-run innings to secure a two-game sweep. The Razorbacks posted three runs in both the third and sixth frames and were held scoreless in just three innings in Wednesday's matchup. The loss was Memphis' fourth against a top-five SEC opponent this season, as the Tigers fell to 0-8 on the road.

Like the Tigers did earlier in the season against both Ole Miss and Vanderbilt, they led early against the Razorbacks. Memphis (9-10) struck in the opening frame against Miller Pleimann (ND) without the benefit of a hit. Ben Brooks drew a one-out walk, Hunter Goodman reached on an error, while Alec Trela drew a walk that loaded the bases. Taylor Howell put Memphis in front 1-0 with a sacrifice fly, though the Tigers left the bases loaded.

Logan Walters (L, 1-1) held the Razorbacks (16-3) in check over the first two innings and went to the third with a 2-0 lead courtesy a third inning sacrifice fly from Trela. Braydon Webb, who reached base safely six times on Tuesday, led off the frame with a double. Walters issued consecutive one-out walks to Cayden Wallace and Cullen Smith, which loaded the bases for Ethan Bates, who brought two runs home with a single to right field. Memphis went to the bullpen and brought in Jackson Cothren stranded two but allowed one inherited runner to score. Arkansas led 3-2 after three innings.

Both teams scored a run in the fourth and went scoreless in the fifth. Ahead 4-3, the Razorbacks provided some insurance for their bullpen, which spun the final seven innings of the game. On the mound, Reed Harding entered for the Tigers to start the sixth but retired just one of the five batters that he faced. Webb drew a leadoff walk and Matt Goodheart followed with a two-run home run. A single from Bates knocked Harding out of the game, as the Tigers turned to Chris Durham. Zack Gregory plated Smith on a sacrifice fly, though Durham stranded the bases loaded and kept Memphis within striking distance down 7-3.

The Tigers got a run back and pulled within three on a solo home run from Brooks that led off the seventh, but Arkansas got the run back in the home half of the inning on Goodheart's fourth hit of the game. Arkansas capped off the scoring on a leadoff home run from Gregory in the eighth, as the Razorbacks took a 9-4 lead, the eventual final, into the final frame.

Kole Ramage (SV, 1), who gave up the home run to Brooks to start the seventh, retired the following nine Tigers in order for the three-inning save. Caden Monke (W, 2-0) preceded Ramage and allowed just one hit over 2.2 scoreless innings. The Arkansas bullpen allowed just four hits over seven frames. The Tigers recorded just seven hits across the two-game series in Fayetteville.

With eight Power Five games in the rearview mirror, the Tigers will conclude non-conference play this weekend against Murray State. The Racers will visit FedExPark for a three-game set that gets underway at 6 p.m. Friday. The teams will play a single game on Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.
