The Anchorage Bowl is expected to see between 1 to 3 inches of snow Thursday, although more could be possible as a low-pressure system moves across Southcentral Alaska, a meteorologist said.
A band of heavier snow is expected to fall during the storm, which could start late Wednesday and trail into Thursday, but National Weather Service meteorologist Eddie Zingone said it’s still unclear where exactly the band will form. Zingone said the band could settle over the Anchorage area, although it could also move more toward the Chugach mountains or Hillside, dropping the higher snow totals toward the east of town.
“Somewhere is going to get some good snow, but whether that really falls on Anchorage and the Mat-Su is not quite as clear, even a day in advance,” he said.
Higher snow totals, with localized amounts up to 8 inches, are possible within the band of heavy snow, the weather service said.
In the Anchorage Bowl, the snowfall is expected to start around 4 to 6 a.m. Thursday and Zingone said it could begin earlier in the Palmer area. The snow is expected to taper off in the afternoon.
The weather service issued a special weather statement warning that the snow could impact commutes on Thursday because reduced visibility and snow-covered roads are possible.
Temperatures this week have had highs in or around the 30s in Anchorage and Zingone said that is expected to continue Thursday, although temperatures are expected to fall again toward the weekend.
