Pedestrian killed in S.F. following 8-car crash - San Francisco Chronicle

asianpostmedia.blogspot.com

San Francisco police were investigating a crash that killed a pedestrian and injured several drivers Thursday morning near Higuera Avenue and Lake Merced Boulevard.

Little was immediately known about the cause of the crash, which occurred before 8 a.m. Officers responding to the incident found a man in his 20s lying in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene, his body moved to the side of the street and covered in a yellow tarp.

Police could not provide an update on the incident Thursday afternoon.

The pedestrian’s name was not released. Officers said the victim was thrown a considerable distance from the point of impact.

One man, who was not identified, was taken into custody in connection with the incident, police said.

Eight vehicles were involved in the crash. Five people, including the man suspected of hitting the pedestrian, were transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries, police said.

Glass and debris from the smashed cars littered the roadway more than two hours after officers arrived at the scene.

Lake Merced Boulevard was shut to traffic in both directions. The wrecked cars, some with airbags deployed, came to rest in a sea of broken glass, bumpers, fenders and hubcaps. Of the eight vehicles involved in the accident, two came to rest facing westbound and one facing eastbound in the northbound lanes.

Investigators were working to determine whether drugs or alcohol may have played a role.
