The winter storm expected to bring up to 8 inches of snow to a big chunk of the state with the potential in some forecasts for snowfall totals closer to a foot has started to hit New Jersey early Thursday and will linger well into Friday in what the National Weather Service is calling another “long-duration snowfall.”

Snow will intensify later this morning and heavy snow will continue into the afternoon before it becomes lighter and changes to mixed precipitation, forecasters say.

During the peak of the storm, travel will be very difficult with many schools closing or switching to remote instruction for the day. Commercial vehicles have been banned from many highways since 4 a.m.

The National Weather Service is calling for 6 to 8 inches of snow in central New Jersey along the I-95 corridor with 4 to 6 inches for much of the surrounding areas. Accuweather continues to stick with its forecast for 6 to 12 inches for the northern half of the state.

State offices including Motor Vehicle Commission centers are closed on Thursday, along with three of the vaccine mega-sites - the Burlington County site at the Moorestown Mall, the Morris County site at Rockaway Townsquare and the Middlesex County site at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center in Edison

While NJ Transit says it plans to run a regular weekday schedule, more than 200 flights out of Newark, Kennedy, LaGuardia and Philadelphia airports have ben canceled as of 5:45 a.m., according to FlightAware.com.

AccuWeather.com’s forecast calls for 6 to 12 inches of snow across much of northern half of New Jersey, with a band of 3 to 6 inches through central part of the state and 1 to 3 inches for most of South Jersey/

The National Weather Service is calling for maximum amounts of 6 to 8 inches and has narrowed that band Thursday morning to areas along the I-95 corridor. The highest snowfall will be across an area that includes Middlesex, Mercer, southern Somerset, southern Hunterdon and small pieces of western Monmouth and northwestern Burlington. Northern Sussex County also is in the 6 to 8 inch window.

Winter weather warnings or advisories are in effect for all 21 counties in New Jersey.

A look a the outlook for the storm, according to the National Weather Service:

Eastern Bergen, Essex, Eastern Passaic, Hudson and Union counties: Three to 5 inches of snow will fall on Thursday with a total of 4 to 8 by the time the last of the snow moves out on Friday. A winter weather advisory is in effect until 10 p.m. Friday.

Western Bergen, western Passaic: From 2 to 4 inches will accumulate Thursday with these areas picking up 5 to 7 inches by the end of Friday. The winter weather advisory runs until 10 p.m. Friday.

Morris, Sussex, Warren: Four to 6 inches of snow is most likely as a winter storm warning is in effect until 10 a.m. Friday. Snow will fall at varying intensities until Friday when it will be light. Sleet could mix in with snow Thursday night.

Hunterdon, Somerset, Middlesex. Western Monmouth, Mercer, Salem, Gloucester, Camden, northwestern Burlington: This chunk of central and inland South Jersey is under a winter storm warning until 10 a.m. Friday with part this area to get as much as 8 inches of snow. The rest will see 4 to 6 inches and a light glaze of ice. Snow should change to sleet and freezing rain during the afternoon and evening, while light precipitation will continue into Friday.

Shortly before 6 a.m. the National Weather Service said in special weather statement that a heavy band of snow was moving across northern Monmouth County and that snowfall rates of an inch per hour are expected.

Eastern Monmouth, Ocean, Cumberland, Atlantic, southeastern Burlington: One to 4 inches of snow and as much as a tenth of an inch of ice are expected by the the winter weather advisory expires at 10 a.m. Friday. Snow will briefly be heavy this morning before precipitation change to sleet and freezing rain Thursday afternoon. Light precipitation will continue into Friday.

Cape May: Up to an inch of snow and a light glaze of ice is in the forecast for this morning. Snow will change to sleet and freezing rain and then plan rain. A winter weather advisory lasts until 10 a.m. Friday as light mixed precipitation continues Thursday evening and through the overnight.

Gradual clearing will occur from south to north in New Jersey on Friday with temperatures topping out in the 30s.

The weekend is still looking dry, sunny and chilly with highs in the 30s. Winds on Saturday could gust to 30 mph making it feel even colder. On Monday, we’re likely to get snow showers but nothing in the way of a significant storm, forecasters say.
