As rain pushes out of New Jersey later this morning, forecasters are turning their attention to another winter storm on Thursday that’s expected to drop as much as 8 inches of snow on parts of the state.
Snow will start falling in the morning on Thursday and overspread the state by afternoon. Later, snow will change to a wintry mix across most of New Jersey with parts of the Jersey Shore and South Jersey flipping to rain. Precipitation should move out by late Friday morning.
The weather service says 2 to 3 inches will pile up in South Jersey, 4 to 6 inches will drop in Central Jersey and 6 to 8 inches will accumulate in North Jersey, though Bergen, Essex and Hudson counties should remain in the 4 to 6 inch band.
AccuWeather.com, meanwhile, says the southern half of the state will receive 1 to 3 inches and the northern half will wind up with 3 to 6 inches. All of New Jersey will also get pelted with some combination of wintry precipitation, the private weather forecasting company says.
In its morning forecast discussion, the National Weather Service says the biggest questions surrounding the storm are how much accumulation the initial “thump” of snow brings and how quickly the snow turns to a mix of rain, snow and sleet.
Temperatures in parts of the state northwestern of Interstate 95 corridor might not climb above freezing during the storm and would only get frozen precipitation.
In the meantime, an ice storm warning remains in effect in Sussex County until 9 a.m. with two to four-tenths of ice likely to accrue, the National Weather Service said.
Rain elsewhere on Tuesday should push out by 9 a.m. and pave the way for a cloudy day with relatively mild high temperatures in the 40s. Wednesday will be dry and sunny, but colder as temps struggle to reach the freezing mark of 32 degrees.
After the next storm, AccuWeather says the mid-Atlantic region will enter a pattern of less storm weather through the end of February.
