MUSKEGON – Orchard View’s boys basketball team got a leg up in the Lakes 8 Activities Conference title chase with a victory over visiting Western Michigan Christian Friday night.

OV was not the lone area boys team to make headlines Friday, however. Check it out:

The season is a marathon, not a sprint, according to Orchard View boys basketball coach Nick Bronsema – even in a condensed season.

Ironically, it was the Cardinals’ speed, quickness and high-tempo brand of basketball that led to a 79-61 victory over visiting Western Michigan Christian Friday in a key Lakes 8 Activities Conference game.

Orchard View (8-0) now has a leg up on WMC (5-3) in the Lakes 8 title chase. The Cardinals are 5-0 in the league, while the Warriors now sit 4-1. The rematch is March 12 at Western Michigan Christian.

Friday’s game was tight at halftime, as OV led 28-26 at the break, but the Cardinals broke it open in the third quarter with a 29-15 scoring surge.

“It was fun watching our guys play together and share the ball,” Orchard View coach Nick Bronsema told MLive via text message. “Credit WMC, who kept battling. Credit our guys, who kept believing.”

Larry Brewer III scored a game-high 25 points for Orchard View on a hot-shooting night, featuring 9-of-10 overall from the floor, 3-for-4 from 3-point land and 6-of-6 at the free-throw line. Brewer also had six rebounds and two steals.

OV leading scorer Ke’Ontae Barnes was his steady self with 24 points, seven rebounds, five steals and four assists. JJ Tunstull had 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

“Larry Brewer displayed his 3-ball and excellent free-throw shooting that is new this year,” Bronsema said. “He had maybe one 3 last year – 25 points and he was all over the place.

“Barnes had his best dunk I’ve ever seen him make.”

Orchard View’s Donovan Daniels finished with eight points, eight rebounds and three steals, while Darius Williams added six points, seven assists, six steals and five rebounds for the very active Cardinals squad.

OV finished with 20 steals.

“Orchard View has a very long and athletic team,” Western Michigan Christian coach Kurt Gruppen said via email. “They were able to speed us up early and make us uncomfortable at times. Turnovers really hurt us and allowed OV to get easy baskets.

“The Warriors continued to battle throughout the game and we look forward to the challenge again in a few weeks.”

Owen Varnado led WMC with 21 points. Brekken Fairfield and Sam Liggett scored 15 and 10, respectively, for the Warriors.

“It’s one game,” Bronsema said. “We look to keep improving every single day.”
