Duke Secures a 24-8 Victory over William & Mary - Duke University - GoDuke.com

DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 15/11 Duke women's lacrosse team defeated William & Mary, 24-8, Wednesday evening in Koskinen Stadium to open the 2021 home slate.

With the victory, the Blue Devils elevate to 2-0 this season and hand the Tribe their first loss of the year.

Twelve different Blue Devils registered goals in the victory as sophomore Caroline DeBellis contributed five points on two goals and three assists. Rookies Katie DeSimone and Katie Keller registered their first goals donning the Duke blue, while Maddie Jenner (4), Katie Cronin (4), Catherine Cordrey (2), Gabby Rosenzweig (2), Abby Landry (2), Anna Callahan (2), Catriona Barry (1), Olivia Carner (1) and Ainsley Thurston (1) helped guide Duke to victory.

The Blue Devils opened the first period 12-7, wasting no time getting on the board 34 seconds into the contest. DeBellis connected on her two goals, one from Cordrey, in the opening half. Rosenzweig and DeBellis provided the assists to Jenner for two of her four goals as she was stellar once again at the draw with 16 draw controls for the game.

Leading 5-2, Duke went on a 4-0 run over a four-minute span, receiving goals from four different players to extend the lead to 8-2 midway through the opening stanza.

The Blue Devils locked in their defense in the second half to limit the Tribe to just one goal. Duke capitalized on the momentum from the first half and packed on another 12 goals.

Carner picked up four ground balls as Jenner and DeBellis both collected two. Katie Cosgrove and Carner also had two caused turnovers apiece.

Duke outshot William & Mary 42-22 and outdid the Tribe at the draw a whopping 24-9. In addition, Duke was flawless on clears, going 11-of-11.

Goalkeepers Chase Henriquez and Sophia LeRose split time in goal for Duke and came away with four and three saves, respectively.

William & Mary was led by Sarah Cipolla with four goals.

Duke will welcome No. 18 Virginia Tech to Koskinen Stadium for a 2 p.m., start on ACC Network.
