UConn Sweeps UNH with 8-3 Win - UConn Huskies

asianpostmedia.blogspot.com

DURHAM, N.H. – UConn junior Jonny Evans (North Delta, British Columbia) and freshman Hudson Schandor (North Vancouver, British Columbia) both scored twice to fuel an 8-3 Hockey East win at the University of New Hampshire on Saturday.

The Huskies put eight-goals on the board for the first time since the 2017-18 season (W, 8-2 vs UMass – 12/5/17) and scored four times on the power play to come away with a weekend sweep over the Wildcats and take five of six points in the standings.  UConn also evened their record at 5-5-1, reaching the .500 mark for the first time this season.

Evans and senior Brian Rigali (Libertyville, Ill.) scored in the first period as the two teams played to a 2-2 first period.  From there UConn ran off four-straight goals into the third period to grab control of the game.  Junior Ryan Wheeler (Lancaster, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate goal and Schandor got his first of the night to push the UConn lead to 4-2 after two periods.

The Huskies ran their lead to 6-2 in the third as Evans buried his second coming on the power play followed by Schandor's second, his first-career multi-goal game.  After UNH stopped the run with a goal from Jackson Pierson the Huskies closed the game with goals from freshmen John Spetz (Oak Ridge, N.J.) and Ryan Tverberg (Richmond Hill, Ontario).

UConn finished the night 4-of-7 on the power play, their first time netting four on the power play since a 5-2 win over Boston University on October 27, 2015.  The Huskies held a 31-24 edge on shots and junior goaltender Tomas Vomacka (Trutnov, Czech Republic) stopped 21 shots to get the win.

Sophomore Jake Flynn (Bridgewater, Mass.) dished out a career-high three assists on the night.  Junior Jachym Kondelik (Budejovice, Czech Republic) and freshmen Artem Shlaine (Moscow, Russia) each had two assists in the win with Kondelik extending his point streak to season-best five-straight games.  Tverberg added an assist to his totals for a two-point night.

For UNH, who falls to 3-7-1 with the loss, Ryan Verrier and Nick Cafarelli each had a goal and an assist.

1st period:

Saturday's first period looked a lot like the Huskies and Wildcat's first 20 minutes in Friday's match-up.  UConn struck first, capitalizing off a UNH turnover in their zone.  Kondelik kept his point streak alive by setting up Evans for a one-time chance on an open net and the junior delivered his fifth goal of the season just 3:53 into play.

UNH got even at 14:36 as Cafarelli scored his first on the year.  Kohei Sato won a puck battle on the right half-boards and Cafarelli picked up the puck and broke to the right post, using his backhand to put a shot in the top-left corner past Vomacka.

UConn got a late goal at 18:46 as Rigali notched his second of the season for a 2-1 lead.  Sophomore defenseman Yan Kuzentsov (Murmansk, Russia) blasted one on net from the top left circle and Rigali, set up in front, got a deflection past Taylor.  UNH roared right back and tied it up with 30 seconds left as Verrier snapped a shot that caromed off a UConn defenseman and snuck past Vomacka to send the game to the first break tied at 2-2.

2nd period:

The Huskies put two in the back of the net late in the second period to take a 4-2 lead.  Wheeler found the back of the net for his first career goal at the 18:30 mark.  Flynn fed Wheeler at the top of the left circle and the junior defenseman fired through traffic to the far post and in for a 3-2 lead at 18:30.

The Wheeler goal came on a delayed penalty call and the Huskies would strike for another on the ensuing power play just 46 seconds later.  Sophomore Carter Berger (N. Vancouver, British Columbia) got a feed out of the corner and sent a cross-ice pass to Schandor who buried it on an open net at the right post for his second on the season and a 4-2 lead.

3rd period:

The Huskies opened the third period by killing of two UNH power plays in the first 7:20 of play.  Evans made it three-straight for the Huskies, scoring the team's third power play goal at 13:04 to make it 5-2 UConn.  Spetz got the puck down deep to Kondelik who flicked a back pass to Evans in the slot for a one-timer.

Schandor picked-up his second of the night at 15:33, getting a redirect of a Flynn shot down low at the right post to make it 6-2 and cap off a four-goal run.  After UNH got on the board at 16:38, the Huskies answered right back with two more to close out the scoring.  Spetz scored his third on the season, weaving his way through UNH to backhand one in for a 7-3 lead at 17:03.  Tverberg closed the night with a power play goal at 18:18, finishing off a Nick Capone (East Haven, Conn.) feed on an open net from the left circle.
