2:02 (1st): Centreville fires a pass to the end zone on fourth down, but Ubly’s Kyle Sweeney breaks it up and we remain at 0-0 after the opening drive for each team.
4:00 (1st): Jared Spencer hauls in a reception then does some tough running to convert on fourth down for Centreville. That was just the 39th pass of the season for Centreville QB Sam Todd.
8:30 (1st): Sam Todd with a dazzling run from his QB position to get Centreville out of trouble. The Bulldogs got away with a peelback block on the reverse-of-field run.
9:52 (1st): Fourth-and-3 at midfield and Ubly goes for it! The Centreville defense -- which has allowed 3.2 points per game -- stuffs it and has a golden opportunity to strike first.
KICKOFF! The game is under way as Ubly receives the kickoff then sends its offense onto the field.
K-minus 5 minutes: This is a matchup of a pair of first-time, first-year head coaches, which is fairly amazing. Centreville’s Jerry Schultz spent the past four seasons as defensive coordinator at Niles. Ubly’s Eric Sweeney has been part of the program forever but was thrust into the top spot in August with the sudden departure of Aaron Maurer for an out-of-area job. Nothing like a little instant success for both coaches.
K-minus 10 minutes: Ubly alum Brandon Deacons providing a bit of history. There is a massive metal “U” that was constructed and displayed on I-75 at Eight Mile when Ubly played in the 2008 state final. They broke it back out today and it is greeting Bearcats fans on their way to Ford Field.
K-minus 60 minutes: Both Ubly and Centreville are vying for the first state championship in program history. Ubly reached the final in 2008 before coming up short against Traverse City St. Francis. The Bearcats reached the state semifinal a year ago. Centreville had never advanced beyond the district final before this year’s historic run. The reality of their historic moment is surely sinking in now as they stand on the turf of Ford Field.
K-minus 70 minutes: Centreville coach Jerry Schultz had his players rising and shining all week in preparation for the 10 a.m. start. He asked his players to snap “breakfast selfies” to prove they were up and at ‘em by 6:30 a.m. So he’s been getting photos of eggs, sausage, French toast and pancakes all week.
“I definitely have tried to make it look extra like pretty on the plate, just so he knows that I’m not like a slob or anything,” QB Sam Todd said.
